Me Loves You, Janis

In a way, the movie shows us the Janis I knew already. The fragile chick with the incredible voice, the high school outcast who wasn't even invited to her prom, who was always out looking for love and recognition -- the eponymous Little Girl Blue. It also hints that there was another Joplin, the control freak who wasn't averse to cutting old friends loose as a business decision. Maybe it would have been time for that other Janis, but the producers apparently didn't think so.

At one point, she is quoted to the point that many people have talent, but after that it also takes dedication. It think this point is crucial to understanding her, but also to understanding the careers and -- often -- breakdowns of musicians such as Amy Winehouse.

Still, a great documentary. One that reminded me that she had a long career as a "psychedelic" blues and soul singer before her mellower hits like Mercedes-Benz, Down On Me or Me & Bobby McGee.
