No third series

Despite the optimism of a Trivia entry ("The series is planned to be a 5-season story arc, taking place between the years 1932 and 1947"), it appears that there will not be a third series, though the only confirmation I can find from an admittedly brief Google is on Facebook.

I found it dull, with hardly any likeable characters (in fact I can't think of one),the only redeeming feature being the scenery. "Constipated" is one word that others have used to describe it. I've stuck with it,but won't be sorry to see it end.

Not that characters have to be likeable to make a good drama - there are many TV and film "baddies" who appeal - but only Julie Walters and Patrick Malahide aroused any interest in me - and I'm a bit curious about the Sikh policeman and his loyalties.

Oh well. That's the end of that then.

The BBC made a similar announcement this week: no s2 for Dickensian.

That's a shame, I've really enjoyed it. I didn't think it could be very popular, I never hear anyone talking about it. To be honest I was surprised (but glad) when they made series 2.

reply

I've enjoyed it too. In fact, I've been waiting for uploads of Season 2, since we won't get them in the U.S. until later this year. I finally found them, then I see there'll be no season 3. Guess there's no reason to watch season 2.

reply

I would still watch season 2. I think I've enjoyed it more than season 1. I watched it thinking it would probably be the last season but it hasn't spoilt my enjoyment of it

reply

This shows pretty interesting, and I'll be watching Season 2 when it airs on PBS, but I still find it odd that the producers chose to shoot this drama in Malaysia instead of India. I guess the ratings in the UK were not high enough to justify future seasons (but then again how can any show match the heights that Downton Abbey achieved?).

reply

Really sad as I loved everything about the show. I found all the characters rich and organically complex. I just hope that the end of season 2 has some closure to it. Personally I liked this show so much that I would purchase season 1 if it came out on sale. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but I considered it near perfect.

reply

Sorry too there won't be a third. Really enjoyed the show.

reply

Probably a good thing.

They got a little too heavy-handed with the evil imperialist Brits theme this season. Ralph allowing his sister to be abused for financial gain, pimping out his wife for political gain, and using children to bait tigers was a bridge too far. Adding the cartoon-like mustache-twirling villain Charlie Havistock sent it completely over the edge.

reply

Well, it has finished, and the last episode was a bit more lively than many others that preceded it, though the family argument about Sooni's wedding dragged on a bit.(By the way, I wasn't clear who owned Chotipool and decided to sell it.)

I had come to tire of Ralph Whelan and Aafrin and their problems.

The series was elegantly filmed, but the time that Channel Four screened it meant it was up against some stiff competition, not least "The Night Manager".

reply

Ralph owned Chotipool and had to sell it after he grew a backbone and stood up to Charlie. Cynthia bought the house after she swapped the house and her club's deeds with the Sood family.

reply

He HATED the way Charlie was treating his sister! But at the time he had no choice, Charlie was bankrolling him!

reply

yeah, charlie havistock-one of the more dispicable characters to ever grace a masterpiece production.

reply

Good thing they canceled before the show became positively ludicrous. Oh no wait, they should have canceled before series 2 then.

My impression of the finale was that they found out there will be no third series before they finished filming and so quickly wrapped up all the storylines to make everything neat and try to get some closure but it just looked naff. I am quite disappointed.

I barely mustered enough interest to make it through Season 1, and I'm already bored part-way through the first episode of Season 2. It's badly written and just plain dull. The characters are neither likable, nor evil enough to spark enough dislike to keep one watching with anything remotely resembling interest. The series feels disjointed and dispassionate. Its cancellation saves me the trouble of turning it off next season.

I own Jewel in the Crown, far superior in every element to Indian Summers, which just seems vapid and random. I've spent the summer acquiring many classic British series. I'm still amazed by how much the quality of British series has dropped the past five years or so. The odd gem still shows up, but such prizes are few and far between. We have the same problem in the States. Perhaps too many modern people lack the patience to develop the fine art of storytelling that combines details and pacing.

I have to admit I mostly went through the motions during Season 1, but by now (S2, Ep.4) I look forward to it, so I'm sorry to read it's going to end!

reply

I'm sorry to hear there will be no season 3 as well. The first episode of season 2 left me a bit unenthusiastic, but it has picked up considerably and I am very into it again.
