Is this 'real' dancing?

I enjoy the show. It is entertaining to watch, and I know that I could not do any of the moves that these girls do. However, is the majorette type of dancing that the girls do on the show considered to be actual dancing or more like what high school cheerleaders do? In other words, could the girls compete in a Dance Moms style of competition? On that show, Abby throws around all kinds of dance vocabulary words at the girls and teaches them "technique." On Bring It, it seems to be about attitude, mean faces, hip shaking, and hair flipping. I'm confused.

It's more like high school/college majorette thing, and it is real dancing just different from the Dance Moms girls. I'm sure they can compete entering it as hip-hop but those type of competitions seem to have a biased towards contemporary stuff. Plus unlike the dances on Dance Moms, the dances don't really tell much of a story (unless they are making fun of their competitors) which is something else they look at in competitions.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: There is no ?correct? way to dance, except in the case of someone creating a dance, coining said dance, and demanding all others perform said dance in a specified manner. Artistic expression is not like Math, where 2 + 2 is always 4...or History, where the War of 1812 occurred in 1812 and that's the end of it! The rules for artistic expression are arbitrary at best, because the rules of such were decided long ago by someone, somewhere, based upon their opinions and taste, and not upon any scientific fact. I wish people would stop downing one form of artistic expression in order to bolster another. Both forms of dance are valid and unique in their own way. Remember, personal taste can not be scientifically validated with empirical evidence. Years from now, Majorette Style will be considered high-brow (based on a change in public opinion) while 2 + 2 will Still and Forever more be 4!
