Why didn't the young sheriff call in the gun shot he heard?
Movie would've ended too soon I guess.
He was going to call it in - but decided to investigate himself. The reason why is sort of a cliche. Young cop trying to prove himself. Notice how the officer he was speaking to on the radio kept calling him a kid and said they will continue calling him that until he earns respect (or something like that, forgot the exact words used)? The young cop thought this was his chance to prove himself. Go in, take down the bad guy, call it in and earn his colleagues respect.
"Now the dream of this life must end, and so, too, must the dreams within it."
I actually thought this would be the place he earned his wings (I think those were the exact words) and I didn't expect him to get killed off so fast like that.
