Just Pull It From The Schedule Already

Seriously, there's no point in even airing it anymore. Go to wherever it's being filmed and tell the cast and crew to pack it up. This show is dead in the water. The fact that Fox has already put it down to only one episode a week and that episode is in the famous Friday-night death slot proves that even Fox knows that's the case. It's like they're just desperately trying to salvage something out of this show, but there's no point. They'd be better off just airing reruns of Family Guy during that time until they can find something else to air, and this is even coming from someone who hates Family Guy. At least that show gets viewership. This one will have less than a million viewers per episode within the next few weeks, and even now the viewership it has doesn't justify the cost.

Fox just needs to accept this was one of their greatest failures in the network's history and cut their loses. Utopia was a massive failure, and trying to pretend like it wasn't is just going to hurt the network even more.

You do know that the plan was to drop one of the nights after about a month right? If you want to talk about the ratings, that's fine, but them dropping one night doesn't mean anything.

reply

Yeah, it was always scheduled to be taken to one day a week. But the OP has a slight point in that it was meant to be one episode on Tuesday, with MasterChef Junior on Friday, but they switched it.

You have to keep in mind FOX - in general - is getting its ass kicked in the ratings this Fall. The CW is actually getting bigger overall ratings than FOX, which is extremely, extremely bad.

reply

True but I heard that the reason they switched it was because they wanted to try and boost The New Girl and The Mindy Project ratings. I don't see how Masterchef Jr would accomplish that but whatever.

reply

If they thought this show had a chance in hell of surviving they wouldn't pick Friday night as the one night a week.

Get over it: this show is dead.

Friday night isn't necessarily "The Death Spot" anymore. Shows like Shark Tank and a few others actually kick ass on Friday nights. I actually think this is more of a weekend show than mid-week anyway, as its a bit on the racy side.

But it is clear FOX is slowly letting it die off. Like I said, it was supposed to be a 2 hour show on Fridays but now, according to my guide, its Utopia 8-9 and then a rerun of Gotham.

FOX has zero patience with shows. And having Utopia premiere opposite Big Brother on the same night, when Big Brother was on for two and a half months at that point, helped kill this show before it even got a chance.

You're right that Friday night as a whole isn't necessarily a death slot, but we're talking about Fox here. So far Fringe is the only major exception I've seen to that. Otherwise, Fox uses Friday night as a way to kill off shows and they have for years. But yes, if we were talking about other networks you would have a point. Another current example is Grimm on NBC. It actually is one of NBC's better performing shows in spite of being on Fridays. In fact since that show is for a niche group of viewers (the sci-fi/fantasy crowd) I'd argue that Friday ended up being the perfect spot for it. But again, we're talking about Fox here, and this is definitely the beginning of the end.

Don't like it ... then don't watch it. Problem solved.

reply

It's not about liking or not liking it. For the record I don't watch it, but I'm just pointing out that there's no good reason to even continue airing it, because almost nobody else watches it either.

Eh, I think its the $50,000,000 price tag on Utopia that will kill it.

FOX must be embarassed and disappointed they put that kind of money into Utopia only for it to underperform. Then again, they had no hype or many commercials for the show.

Plus, like I said, pitting it up against Big Brother was stupid. They should have waited until either November or early Spring to build an audience.

reply

lol I completely forgot about the show until just a few days ago. I knew it was undoubtedly cancelled, but of course out of curiosity I checked to see when it was finally canned.

So does anyone still think Friday night was just "part of the plan" and the network had no intention of cancelling it?
