Just wondering if it's based on any actual Hindu-flavoured spirituality. What was that gatekeeper of death called? Something beginning with R I think.

It was Myrtu, I'm pretty sure

Myrtu. More known as Yamuna, the purifier of sin.

Though not completely, I think its more real to hindu mysticism than the indigenous Indian films depict in their commercial movies.
