Mixed feelings: setting/kills = A; humor = C-

Im a huge fan of 5SF and have been looking forward to this release ever since they met their kickstarter goal. I purchased the deluxe version of this movie from 5SF the morning of its release this week.

The concept, setting, look (vhs!) and tone of the movie is great. It does come across exactly as a cheezy 80s frat slasher flick that one would rent based on the box art while browsing at a video store. The opening 10 minutes, which include two montages of kills which represent Part I and II was outstanding. Hilarious and, of course, graphic deaths abound.

However, unfortunately, I found the humor and middle of the film surprisingly lacking. There's some funny bits here or there and some purely wacky concepts but otherwise it was so-so. Considering the group was so good with comedic timing in their 5 sec films i guess i was hoping for more. I do acknowledge humor is subjective and others might find more laughs than i did.

I also know that parody...good parody is tough to pull off. I think they should be commended for really playing the concept as a real frat slasher flick but in doing so it almost ended up too much like a cheezy direct-to-video frat slasher flick and therefore suffers the same weaknesses of those movies: some good kills but overall meh movies.

Yeah I kinda see where you are coming from.

As someone who has very limited experience of bad '80s horror flicks, I think some of the humour might have simply flown over my head. But I did get a great deal of satisfaction just from seeing the whole gang in their element, especially with the odd cameo here and there (looking at you, Cracked.)

I have to give a lot of credit to some of the deaths, which were usually the funniest bits. Really creative, like with the guy on the boat shooting himself in the head. And I can't believe I actually bought the whole'Ronald Reagan in Motherface' theory! It all seemed to make sense!

And that's all I have to say about that.
