Besides the "why didn't they take the trucks" question, all of the guys are shown with radios. Yet they never used them to try and contact base?

The radios they have are probably ISR radios. Short-range, called Intra-Squad Radios. Probably less than 100 feet range. Impossible to contact base. Only radio useful for that is the one in the vehicle.
