BAPTIST BATISTE !!!!!!!!!

I swear this guy thinks he's in a gossip church. For anyone not familiar with that particular domination, the church attendees will often repeat (out loud) what the reverend has just said. When they aren't repeating him word for word they'll call out "Amen" or something else to show their agreement of what is being said.

The above description seems to fit for Batiste. If anyone thought he was obnoxious in the first season, he's only become more obnoxious in the second. He is RUINING every one of Stephen's monologues. Fans of Colbert's brand of comedy are in the audience or at home to see and hear STEPHEN (and not his desperate for attention band leader). More and more you can hear Batiste repeating every joke (or part of ) right after Stephen verbalizes them. When he's not doing that he's responding to Stephen's monologues with repetitive phrases such as: "I like that; Oh Oh OH!; MmmHmm ...... not to mention singing "Oh Lah Dee" .... whatever the hell that means. And do I even need to mention Batiste's over the top laughing and clapping? I haven't heard anyone on late night talk shows go out of their way to FAKE such an annoying laugh since the days of Ed McMahon (from Johnny Carson's old show).

For the love of God, will someone PLEASE TURN OFF BATISTE'S MICROPHONE during the monologues. In essence he's having his own private conversation with Stephen throughout the entire monologues segments. If Batiste's ego grows any bigger his head will explode !!!

P.S. Just thought of something else he does that is annoying. At the beginning of every show, just as Stephen is coming out to the stage, you can clearly see Batiste standing in front of the audience over-exaggerating how difficult it is to play his instrument; he's bobbing his body up and down. Afterwards, when he's back with the band and the theme song is over, he throws his head and hand up in the air, laughs (who knows why) and mugs for the audience and camera as if he's just played a concerto at Carnegie Hall.

FWIW, Batiste has gotten a lot less stiff when Stephen asks him questions, but, whatever gains he's made in that department are completely obliterated by his monologue interjections.

I've never heard the term 'gossip church' before, but I don't think this is that. For Batiste, he's basically playing the spectator role from the Dozens

A few years back, Cleto was doing this kind of thing to Jimmy Kimmel, but, fortunately, they eventually shut that down. I'm sure that eventually they'll grow out of this, but, it can't be soon enough.

In an effort to save his dying ratings, in recent months, Stephen's made a move towards more offensive jokes during his monologue, which is great, because that's when he's his best, imo. That's one of my favorite parts of stand up- when a comedian gets in an incredibly fierce dig, and part of the audience goes 'oooooh.' Bill Maher gets incredibly pissed off when anyone in his audience gets offended, which really doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Anyway, I have enjoyed the new slightly edgier Stephen, but with edgier Stephen came talkative Batiste. If given the choice between edgier Stephen + talkative Batiste and Stephen Bland, I'd choose the former, but ideally, Batiste would just shut the h up.

I don't think Batiste is an attention whore as much as he's just one awkward dude.
