Interned at Eloise (Wayne County General hospital ) 1955-1956

Wayne County General Hospital also known as Seymour was a well regarded General hospital. It was for the most part in C building. I was one of 50 interns in 1955. Medical students from Wayne State and later from the University of Michigan rotated there. We rotated through surgery and medicine. We also spent a month taking care of patients in N building that housed a large number of indigent men. The were referred to as POGEs (poor old guys at Eloise). There was an active emergency room which was very busy on Saturday nights receiving accident victims from the surrounding area. It was a great experience for me and the other interns, who came from medical schools through out the country.

Our only contact with the patients in the mental wards was when they developed a physical Illness. The mental hospital had an active residency program. My father took a psychiatric residency there in 1935-1940 and remained on the staff for several years.

Eloise had a great comradely between physicians, nurses and other staff. A bit of a family feeling with picnics and other social events.
