Probably J.K Rowling's biggest inspiration!

I've always believed that The BFG has been J.K Rowling's biggest inspiration for the Harry Potter books. The whole part with the orphan (who in the book and in the animated movie looks like Harry Potter) who is getting visited by a giant in the middle of the night and getting transported into another world where magical creatures exist; it's all from here. Rowling has said that Dahl has been a huge inspiration, but I haven't read anything about the BFG. It's clear, however, that Harry Potter stems from Dahl's book.

Dahl's influence is all over the Harry Potter books. The wizarding sweets and chocolates are straight out of Mr Wonka's factory, for starters. The two authors also share a love of inventive whimsy and of not dumbing down their readers.

The movie Troll is even more so down to the name Harry Potter.

^Therefore, Rowling can suck my Harry Dick

I prefer Dahl as Rowling exempts the under 12s from her world of magic. A film critic erroneously said recently that her new movie 'Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them' was a film for the whole family, when actually the film has a 12 rating.

Rowling borrowed from many sources; Greek Mythology, King Arthur etc. A boy Harry/Arthur with the help of a friendly mentor Dumbledore/Merlin has to grow/learn and eventually fight his nemesis Voldemort/Mordred. Two "Mor's" in those names.
