I love Steven Spielberg, but I don't know what the hell happened here.
The movie is BORING AF! No emotions, just "cute" or "funny" situations over and over again.
I turned it off as soon as they started throwing around huge chunks of food in the BFG's house. I'm not sure why anyone, even children, would consider this funny. Also I'm personally sensitive to this because I would be beaten as a child if I wasted even a crumb of food.
The dream jars are interesting to me as is the dream hunting sequence. Also, the first 10 minutes is exciting. I have problems with everything else.
I just watched Pete's Dragon which is riveting. It makes BFG look awful.

I was explaning the movie for a friend. I literally use a few words and then I said: Dude, what I just said, happens in ONE HOUR!
The movie last 2, so I couldn't watch it... and I love Steven Spielberg, for me he's the best director of all times, but this movie was boring as f_uck
After a cuple of weeks I decided to finish the movie, thinking "well, maybe the movie gets better at the end"... BUT NO! It was just a boring ending as well!
What Spielberg was thinking???
You really need to finish it to appreciate how crap it is.
There was a line in there about how dreams seem to be a lot longer than they actually are. It's a perfect metaphor for this movie.

The movie was based on a short children's book, which didn't have enough to make a 2 hour film. It should have been a 1-hour straight to video deal.
shareThe breakfast sequence dragged on so much! I mean, I thought the movie was ok, and the first few minutes were really good, but when they go to Giant Country, it stops being good. Then comes the Dreamcatching scene, which was visually stunning, then it gets a little worse. Then they go to the queen, and at first it seemed quite ok, but it just dragged on and on, until I nearly left. Really should've done that better Spielberg.

shareThis movie really captured that childlike wonder for me. Both myself and my husband really enjoyed it, I found the BFG himself to be endearing and sweet. I don't understand all the hate for this movie, it is extremely faithful to the book with just a few added scenes and dialogue. A movie doesn't need to have lots of violence, sex, and swearing to be entertaining and it also doesn't need to be lowbrow, cheap jokes. This is a calm movie about how a girl realizes what she really wants deep down, helps save a lot of people, and finds a home while making life better for someone else when it didn't benefit her at all. Open your eyes.
shareBFG is one of my favorite children's books. I finally got around to watching the movie. I really enjoyed it compared to A LOT of children's movies these day that base their whole story lines off of crude jokes. It was it was a nice change even if they had the fart in there but that was in the book. It is based more on just being in a fantasy as opposed to be being let's just make you laugh and do antics through the whole film. That's why it worked for me. I do wish he would have stuck closer to the source material. The other Giants were were horrifying in the book along with when the BFG explains that when someone picks a flower he can hear it screaming as it's arm is being twisted off or something to that effect. I think of that everytime something gets picked. The book has some really grim aspects that make you really think. This did an okay job with the material and I wasn't bored. I liked it and appreciated the effort but again, should have stayed a bit closer to the book. Maybe Speilberg didn't want to traumatize kids though the added boy with the red jacket was grim and the end was more sad along with happy but the book has one great joke toward the end with some drunks that they completely missed out on. I won't spoil it for anyone but it was great!
shareYes! So glad to see someone else who both appreciates the source material and enjoyed the movie! As with all of Dahl's books, there are some really disturbing things in the book that I'm glad they didn't include, since seeing those thing in "real life" would be a bit much, I think.
shareIt wouldn't be allowed by today's standards anyway. Though I would like to see someone make a Dahl book in all the darkness for adults. It would probably be more disturbing than any horror movie. Dahl had a very brillant but distubed imagination. That's what made his books so great!
