Why Aren't More People Seeing this Film?

It's important.

How?

I think I'll do fine with Animals and Requiem for a Dream and not this complete waste of time, thank you very much.

I did like how ANIMALS showed more of what she had to do to get money for drugs (the "dates".) I thought with HKW shying away from that (apparently Ms Holmes worked as a dominatrix at night but the directors decided to not go there) it rendered the film a little pedestrian.

Requiem for a Dream is pretty trashy in comparison to more realistic movies about addiction like Animals, Candy and Trainspotting.

Yet to see a better film on heroin addiction than 'Candy' but have high hopes for Heaven Knows What.

Requiem for a Dream just came off as way over the top, although it had some nice camera direction the story was unrealistic on a lot of scenes and came off as a bit of a DARE drug special than anything real.

Eleanor,

I am one of the few that actually saw this movie. One of the worst movies I've seen in a LONG time.

There are so many indie movies out there that are deserving to be seen. This one surely is not one of them, I'm afraid.

If you want a more detailed reasoning, I posted my review here on IMDb.

I actually enjoyed this low key; on the fly look at the drug culture among a group of people in NYC. It seemed both authentic and gritty; and all of the leads did a fine job - with kudos to the Harley character.

I think this is as deserving as any and actually MUCH More than most. The REAL Emotion in this film topples the BS I see daily. Digital Cameras have gave us a ton of dumb, cliché Indie Films. This isn't one of them.

maybe b/c its depressing as fu%$.....

Very true. But she did have like 3 guys dogging her. Didn't seem like such a bad life.

I much preferred Daddy Longlegs, a very very very good indie. One of my fave indies of last ten years actually.
This movie felt like Safdies doing Nan Goldin impression.
And while Daddy Longlegs felt a little like Safdies doing Cassavettes, it felt more true to them. To me.

I've searched for this "Daddy Longlegs" movie on IMDB, but it keeps on coming up empty. I'm very fascinated with the heroin drug culture (RFAD the novel is actually much grittier and by all accounts more accurate than the film it portrayed, at least IMHO), and I've also been fascinated with REAL DOCS like Heroin: Cape Cod that was released this past Fall to HBO (Marissa's story in particular threw me for a loop).... I also liked the "realism" of this film as a whole, but am still wondering if, or when, I can obtain access to this Daddy Longlegs film. It sounds like something many of us on this board would really enjoy! Any info on where you saw it? :)

I live a half hour from the Cape in a City full of Poverty and just as much Heroin. I actually knew a couple of those girls through friends. Very real and very scary. My City is more like this than the Doc. We recently had 40+ ODs in 48hrs. It's no joke and films like this are good at showing people how it truly is.

There's no plot for like...95% of the movie.

reply

That's not entirely true. Sure, there aren't a whole lot of big events, but what we get instead is a peek into the daily life of the characters. Look at all the scenes separately though, and there are a lot of minor plot points in addition to the few big ones.

Well it's not 100% realistic. Harley never gets dope sick. She never has to worry about anything because she's a got a guy who's willing to take care of her. Not to mention it's probably the whitest street movie I have ever seen.

reply

people tend to not want to see teenagers or people in their early 20s shooting dope, stealing and dying. especially when it's told in a cinema verite / documentary style which makes it all the more graphic. which is a shame because this is a pretty great movie...

so? did goodfellas or raging bull have plots? did the panic in needle park (this movie's great uncle) have a plot?

reply

Most people would not be able to take this film, but those who can will be richly rewarded.
