The cop didn't even know who he was fighting in the war?

One strange thing I noticed (I see that it's also mentioned in the goofs section) when the police officer was confronting Donovan after the attack on his house - he says he fought on Omaha Beach against "these guys", against commies.
It's quite a simple history fact that USA was fighting Nazi Germany and Japan in WW2 while being in an alliance with the Soviet Union.
It just doesn't seem realistic to me that someone who actually fought in the war could forget who he was fighting against as that would be one of the most important events in his life.

Actually, the landing in the Normandy was done to build a second front for the Nazis to fight. When they started the attack, the western Allies knew already, that Germany will be overrun by the Soviets. So by attacking Germany, they were able to distract the Nazis on the Western Front and also are able to stop the Soviets to overrun whole continental Europe. Because this was a fear especially Churchill had. There were even plans on Western Allied and the German Generals to continue the fight after the Nazis are done and fight against the Soviets.
This never happened as the last year of the war was the most deadliest of all years, on soldiers and civilians. Thus the plans were never realized. But if e.g. the Hitler Assassination by Stauffenberg had worked out, just after the landing in the Normandy was successful, and the Non-Nazi Generals had taken over the power, it had been a quite possible scenario.
