Hanks and the "Comic Relief" spoiled the movie.

I'm so tired of the Tom Hanks sneer that I could just screem. He is not a serious actor. He's a bafoon in a J.C.Penny suit and tie. The comic relief in this movie along with Hanks was an insult to the seriousness of the circumstance at the time. Spielberg and Hanks make a mockery of history.

No.

I find Oscar Bait infinitely more interesting than ticket bait

I second that!

I'm trying to recall moments of comic relief other than Abels "would it help?" catchphrase. I do not recall much humor in this film. If anything, the u2 crash seemed out of place and forced. I still enjoyed it though.

reply

I agree. I don't recall many forced light spots. There were a couple of funny bits(like when the Hanks character was delighted he foiled the date between the young lawyer and his daughter) however no one was mugging for the camera.

The word is "buffoon," not "baffoon." If you're gonna toss insults, at least spell them correctly.

May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?

reply

I liked the inside joke where the cop was pissed at the Hanks character and yelled that he was in the third wave at Normandy. (Spielburg directed Hanks as a character in the first wave at Normandy.)

reply

The scene with Abel's fake family was amusing.

reply

The Ott character was totally out of place. He was practically slapstick.

Ott reminded me of Sgt Shultz

What? That's what got Powers captured. That's the conflict of the movie. There's no movie without that scene

reply

I would disagree. Yes, there were some lighter moments in the movie but it didn't distract from the movie or even the times. The "family" is seen as a clumsy attempt by the Soviets/East Germans to complete the illusion of a family and gain an edge.

As for Hanks not being a serious actor, Have you seen "Philadelphia"? Or "Road to Perdition"? Or "Saving Private Ryan"? or "Apollo 13"? One doesn't win two Oscars and nominated for others without being a serious actor.

Mockery of history? The movie is a snapshot of time, highlighting moments during the story. Seeing people being shot for trying to escape is not a mockery but an accurate reflection of what happened.

There were a few light moments, but I didn't find them out of place. after all, life does have light moments, even serious situations. i think Tom hanks was very good.

Thank you Rita Wilson. 🇬🇷

I think the 'comic relief' made the film feel more real. You think people didn't make jokes back in those days?

reply

I agree the comic relief was some of the best parts of the film, especially to allow the tension and drama shine when appropriate.

Many were small bits that were "smirk" worthy. The one which I definitely remember is when one of the Soviet embassy aides (I think) was leading Hanks/Donovan through a few rooms - and first he lets Hanks go ahead of them, and then he races ahead and cuts him off.

Hello? She's also known as "Mrs. Tom Hanks".

I think, it was a solid movie, but I also felt that they had problems to balance the general comedic atmosphere with the more dramatic scenes of the movie, like the soldiers ordered to kill themselves if needed or when Donovan sees some young people get shot at the Berlin Wall.

First, this movie was written by the Coen brothers, and I think the humour was incredibly well done. It wasn't over the top; instead, it was sprinkled in just enough to add levity to specific scenes. Plus, the best dramas all incorporate some comedy; you can't have lows without the highs. As for Tom Hanks acting: I think he is one of the best actors, if not the best actor working today, he can say more with one expression than most actors could say with ten lines of dialogue. Many of his movies require him to carry the movie, they aren't packed with action or special effects; they are character driven movies and plots that require incredible performances to make them as poignant as they are. He picks the kind of roles where, when you try to imagine any other actor playing the role; you couldn't imagine the movie being as good with anyone else in that role. I usually feel that actors get far too much credit for a movies success, and directors and especially writers don't get enough credit for making a movie great. Tom Hanks is on a very short list of actors I consider deserve all the credit they get.

I can't tell if you're a troll or just a moron.
