Another stinker

Syfy has had a streak of poorly written and produced shows. This can be added to that list.

reply

Agreed, and the special effects in the first episode are atrocious. I'm not sure if it was intentional or if the budget was just so dismal it was all they could afford. Either way it was painful to watch.

reply

Fully agree. The effects were so bad i actually thought it was intentional for a moment. "Oh maybe its some artistic way of telling stuff", you know. I mean how is it possible to make greenscreen work that bad in 2015? But no, its just bad bad bad. I feel sorry for all the actors trying to cheer for it on twitter atm.

...and this is what happens when a series get greenlit by sexual favors & not by a storyline.*

At least it's historically accurate. After all, people in mythological ancient Greece really did speak with British accents. They were all Anglo-Saxon Brits back then too.

reply

The show is awful but that's a silly thing to say. By your reasoning they should be speaking ancient greek, latin or whatever the hell they spoke back then.

reply

I wasn't reasoning at all. I'm poking fun at the Hollywood convention that ancient Greeks and Romans generally are portrayed as Victorian English people. Or the convention that any non-American character is often played with a British accent or by a British actor. Not just with ancient Greeks either. Jean-Luc Picard was supposed to be French, but he was played by a Shakespearean British actor. (I'm not criticizing Patrick Stewart. I generally liked his portrayal and that show, even if the British accent standing in for a French accent is silly.)

reply

it's because the brits are so damn good at acting. actors and actresses are better, their tv shows are much better, I like their movies better, but it's sad the BBC has really gone downhill, the quality of their shows is not what it once was.

reply

Agreed. Maybe they should try something Sci-Fi for a change ...

reply

After BSG, I thought here's a show that was so good, sorry to see it end, but surely they will do another, a sequel, a prequel, something. or a totally different show but with the same writers, producers etc that would be as good. as john belushi was famous for saying "buuut nooooooooooo!"

nothing, nada, zero even remotely as good as battlestar. why? I don't understand. too expensive to make?

I would be happier if they just showed constant reruns of star trek, space 1999,UFO, firefly, lex, farscape etc.

reply

I wish syfy would just have one day a week where they show nothing bu the old classic sci-fi shows like the ones you mentioned.

They can use the rest of the week for their original series', asylum movies, reality shows, and wrestling.

thats a great idea, even have it on late night or something. we took all those old shows for granted. I remember when the sci fi channel first came out, of course our local cable didn't have it and I was seeing all the great old shows they were showing and couldn't wait to get it. so finally I got direct tv when it first came out and you actually had to pay $300 for the dish, plus the monthly fee. so now I got sci fi channel and literally one month after I got it, they took off all the old shows like space;1999 and UFO they had been showing for years.

even shows like lex, farscape etc werent' all that fantastic but at least it was something half way original and kinda fun. used to watch MST3K all the time. these shows we just took for granted. now, there is nothing even nearly as good or fun. I got totally addicted to bablyon 5 too. BSG was great, not all of them but most of them were great tv. now there is just nothing as far as sci fi on tv anymore.

what I don't get, is with CGI you can now make some great effects that don't require a lot of sets and money, yet still nothing.

Oh there is that new show that they are always talking about on the internet constantly, forgot what it's called. I tried watching it, and to me it seemed like "the office" only in space. with a lot of bickering and shaky camera work. it just didn't capture me. guess I'm too old in that I prefer something besides inter office rivalries and bickering with shaky cameras bouncing all over the place and everybody has to be under 30. shoot, the first doctor in the pilot of star trek was a kindly old gent with silver hair. but I digress

Right now SyFy has "Defiance" which I think is decent. I have high hopes for their upcoming shows, "Killjoys" and "Dark Matter". I also watch "Lost Girl" and "Bitten" on SyFy which are not all that good but they have their moments.

I will never understand why they did not take Witches of East Wick and The Secret Circle to Syfy.

reply

Almost Human and Firefly would have been nice too.
