Same director, I though Ichi The Killer was pretty great in it's own unique way so I am curious about this film and how it compares

Ichi is one of my fave movies of all time, and in the Top 2 of Miike films that I have seen (and I am up to about 30 now). while I would rate Ichi a 10 out of 10, this one got a passable grade of 7 out of 10. Amusing, silly, nicely shot, some recurring Miike themes, but not a masterpiece by any means, and definitely NOT the first Miike you should see.

shareI saw Ichi the Killer years ago and enjoyed it but have never had the desire to see it again. The first thing i thought when the credits rolled on this was "WTF?! I have to watch that again soon,for enjoyment as much as picking up on anything I missed on the first viewing." It's just a weird gangster-horror-comedy as far as I can make out. In a good way.

This one had some funny scenes but was quite a mess overall. To me, it's around 5/10 territory.
Exactly, it's more like Full Metal Yakuza and his earlier Yakuza flicks. People were expecting Ichi too much and felt burned when it didn't follow suit.
