WTF is this *beep*

Takashi Miike used to make good movies, dark toned and stylish, but he's getting lazy on this one. It was filled with WTF all along, and people are leaving the cinema before it even ends. It's just so bad

I get it that Japanese movies has their own weird *beep* comedy, but this is taking things to a new level of *beep* I was waiting for the Yayan showdown, but alternate punching? WTF!

There's no drama, no action, he could have made a simple revenge story in a darker tone where every body dies at the end and it'll be a better story than this pure *beep*

I think its fantastic and funny. Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill come to mind. You are obviously not a comedy guy but like straight up stories and action. This a parody of all the things you like but i think a sense of humor is warranted Not meant to be anything other than fun.

reply

Nah, I do get comedy, satir, and especially japanese comedy, I rate them in a different way. But I still find this garbage, the captain ringing ear? There's over the top visualization and there's this garbage. I love Miike's movie, I think he's very talented, but this one is just lazy filmmaking. I might give it a pass if they market it as comedy, but there's no laugh, just cringey wtf moment.

reply

People always leave the cinema during Miike screenings, usually unsuspecting middle-aged bourgeoisie. But people also laugh, ejaculate and applaud. Or at least they did at the session I attended. These kinds of visceral reactions are a sign of a great filmmaker.

ejaculate?

reply

What? You didn't ejaculate?? Not even a little prequal??

reply

Yeah well that's your oppinion... I was hoping for a movie like this, that's what Miike is famous for! Easily comparable with the also fantastic "dead or alive" movies. AND the endfight was hillarious... The whole cinema laughing tears... Sorry but I guess it's just not your kind of humor, better watch Big Bang ;)

I saw this at a cinema at the Melbourne Film Festival and about one third of the audience walked out

As compared to the over 50% that walked out on 'Audition" all those years ago

I don't understand it myself

We were all warned it was, even by his standards, exceptionally strange,

Loved the guy in the frog suit !!!!

As a huge fan of this director, I had a lot of fun watching this film. It's pretty much what you expect from a Miike Yakuza film. And he still makes good films.

I was kinda liking the first hour or so (the egg frying scene, lol), but then it went downhill fast. The fight scenes were nice, but the story... oh boy. It just made no sense at all. I know it was Miike's intention, but it was really bad.

Whatever happened to the Kappa man? The last scene I remember him appearing was in the one the Frog Man arrives in town.

reply

Miike seemed to be after the Japanese mafia in this movie in a serious but also comic way."subtract stupid from yakusa and you get nothing." Miike always has something social to say.

What are you talking about? This was terrific. Whole movie was just filled with craziness. Did you see like two-three more known Miike movies if you think he never did madhouse movies like this? You really haven't seen Zebraman for example?

Any person who says "Oh we getz leave da theater, so bad bad bad, it's true cuz I said people leavez theater" instantly lose all credibility with me. It's one of those "My dad is stronger then yours and my dad will beat up your dad if you don't agree with me" statements.

Yep, that's why it's terrific. Final showdown came out of nowhere. Totally unexpected. Frog Guy was priceless. Straight out of some anime or Japanese fighting game. One of the more unique and original characters I've seen in while.

There's no drama, no action, he could have made a simple revenge story in a darker tone where every body dies at the end and it'll be a better story than this pure *beep*

What the hell are you talking about? Half of the scenes were fight scenes, other half oddball comedy... and yes, we definitively need another one of those "dark revenge story". It's not like market is filled with those.

reply

As a Miike fan since 2000, I have to say that movie sucked.

I love his work, admire his craziness in some ways but this is WAY to much.

reply

And now we know what was his target audience.

I thought this was pretty great. Confusing and violently foolish. Its a bit to long but i had such a great time with it. But Yeah its not for everyone. 8/10
