Where are all the actual Movie Stars?

Nicholson, DeNiro, Pacino, Hoffman, Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, etc. etc. etc. I mean really Zendaya and Kerry Washington? And what the hell was that on Travoltas head? A hat it looked like his hair was made out of black felt between that and the botox and pancake make up he looked like he was in a wax museum.

The saving grace of the evening was Lady Gaga's performance and Julie Andrews.

Next year they will probably have the Kartrashians presenting...

Now that makes no sense. Travolta was in movies in the 1970s so he has passed the threshold of becoming an actual movie star. I understand what you said about Zendaya and Kerry Washington because the upgrade that transmogrify them into stars haven't been scheduled yet. Rest assured that in 2050 people will complain why are trashy actors born after 2030 attending Oscars when superactor Kerry Washington and hyperdirector Zendays are not.

reply

What have any of those actors you listed done recently that has people talking? They want people to watch and having a bunch of people no one is talking about doing the presenting isn't going to do that.

reply

They were likely there, but the camera only spots them out when they are nominated.

What have they done recently? Not made unmemorable movies. The industry is hemorrhaging money because no one is going to the movies anymore. And the reason for this is they are not impressed with new actors. Its like daytime TV actors have been given waaaaaaaay too much exposure. This year audiences lack of interest was painfully visible. Better luck with next years releases. This lack of interest could be a result of generation gap, or it could be that new actors are simply not up to standards that audiences have experienced in the past.

I can understand that none of those legendary actors were spotted, as they havent done anything in a while. At the same time I agree that even present day stars like Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Ben Stiller, George Clooney and Angelina Jolie were all missing.

All in all, a pretty weak year...

reply

Most of those names appeared 2 years ago at the 85th; whilst the likes of Clint Eastwood, Robert Duvall and Bruce Dern were there, it was only as audience members (some as nominees) with nothing to do. You!re right, by dumping the history of the event, we are left with a variety show stuffed with current faces and no emotional resonance for audiences. The rapturous response to Julie Andrews should teach the producers that audiences want to see legends, but with audience figures down again this year, the spiral towards more in-vogue populism will continue I reckon...

completely agree and is what i first thought of this year. I know a lot of well known actors were not nominated, but it would of been nice to see big name actors there just because theyre big names. im talking about leo, depp, clooney, damon, pitt, hardy, bale, reeves, ford, pacino, de niro, nicholson and many others. I kind of understand why they werent there but it seems like previous years had a bigger list of A listers. Hopefully next year brings out some better names.

Of the over 140 acting Oscar winners still alive, there were no more than 20 (including this year's winners) present this year: if previous winners can't be bothered to honour movie heritage then what hope has the event got?

reply

Exactly.. i tuned in to see all my favourite actors/actresses. and although i still liked to see the people who were there, it seemed not nearly enough.

Clint had several of his old co-stars to keep him company including Duvall, Dern and MacLaine!
