Great film

Saw a screening of it a few hours ago. Beautifully shot, incredible acting and an interesting subject matter that that takes unexpected turn. I was glued to the screen. Easily the best film I've seen at the film festival thus far.

I think it was outstanding too. As the Director has said, it is the story of lonely people - some who do not realize they are lonely - trying to help each other to overcome their past.

** spoilers **

The Chief asks her department head .. are you suggesting we let the abuse continue? And it wraps this same thing to the end, when the young officer says, "I should not be saying this .. the girl was abused certainly .. but I think she is a monster" So the abuse is allowed to continue because some people label a person as unlikeable or "too damaged" to be treated like "regular folk".

I like how it tries to trick the audience -- including me -- to jumping to conclusions about their relationship because of the thoughts in OUR HEADS which are based on stereotyping. In reality -- the girl had lost her mother and was anchoring onto the Chief in the same way she would have remembered her mother being close to her. And this shows up in the interrogation where the "leading question" of "did she adore you" -- got the girl dreamily expression of wishing out loud what she wished was true.

It portrays evils seeming innate understanding of how to manipulate perceptions, and thus "systems" -- and how "good" had to learn to respond "in kind" to right things.

I never thought that Young-nam had done anything untoward with Dohee. It was clear that the social workers were manipulating the girl, who does not understand the consequences of her words, into answering in a certain way.

I liked it a lot. Not really unexpected and some cliche over the top crying scenes, but it was indeed a very good film.

You are watching a Korean film. Over the top crying scenes comes with the territory. haha

Can't believe how quiet this board is. Watched it on British tv last night. Moving story, fantastic acting, almost turned into a total horror there at the end but thankfully a happy ending

A Girl at My Door was a gripping film. The narrative and characterisations work brilliantly to engage us in thinking about various topics, wherever it be perceptions of homosexuality within South Korean society or the mental trauma of abusive relationships. The fact that they merge to create a thoughtful, engaging narrative shows its mesmerising strength as a film.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

I loved it, but at the end I thought she was going to say something like "go ahead, jump, be free" lol, It was an unexpected ending for me, 'cause it was a happy one.
