Mixed Mesage? [Possible Spoiler]

In the intro, and again at the end, Tina says this is a story of how Maya overcomes her low station in the tribe. She does a great job providing for and protecting Kip, and helping the ousted group find food in the city. But really, the only way she rose to a better place in the tribe was hooking up with Kumar. The outsiders dethroned Raja and the Sisterhood, and Kumar dethroned them. Maya's station improved only on Kumar's coat-tails. Basically saying that for a female, the only way to get ahead is finding the right man?? That's not really the story that was promised, nor a positive message for a female-centric story.

I disagree with your assessment of how Maya advanced her position. Spoiler: She gained the other monkeys respect by leading them through unusual circumstances and had nothing to do with the Raja vs Kumar issue.
I feel even if Raja had remained leader that the new respect she gained from the sisters alone would have guaranteed her a branch at the least.
However, it is neat to hear your opinion which I feel also has validity.

There is no message. It's how nature is.

reply

EXACTLY!! It's a documentary about monkeys, not equal rights.

This is not the human world. This is nature, and in certain animal species a female must latch onto a strong male to make it.

Not a mixed message at all. She realized her objective.
