Ending?

I got distracted towards the end and can't figure out what happened. She tells her boyfriend that she doesn't want to get married and have that kind of life. But then where does she go? I thought she might be trying to go home, then changed her mind for some reason? Just trying to figure out what happened in that last scene.

Thanks for any help. Awesome film, I really like this director's three films.

She almost returns home, but can't quite bear to do so. We see her weeping, then she's off camera. The final shot shows her crossing the frame, looking very determined, very much like she's just made her mind up. About something.

I think it's entirely open-ended about what she's decided (except for the fact that she is moving away from the door to her family's apartment, so we know she's not returning there). The point is that she has decided something. As she did earlier in the film, she has a plan.

We as viewers can imagine the next chapter in her life, but that would be another film. Her character has shown sufficient resilience that we can imagine that she may yet make something of herself.

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.

I was kind of devastated by the ending. I wanted it to be happy, but I think the whole point was that she was a girl left with limited options after being refused an opportunity to go to a "normal" high school, so it makes sense that in the end we don't see her necessarily finding a satisfying alternative to having a better life. She's basically on a quest, and that quest is never-ending--or at least it won't find its end in this film. The ending helps make it an amazing film, and I'm glad we get to see her look of determination (which tells her there is hope), but it still made me sad.

Overall, it's a fantastic film.

From the outset we see that Marieme is an intelligent girl who is street smart too. We don't know what became of her father but she and her sisters are ruled and oppressed by their older brother Djibril who has assumed a paternal role even if he is oppressive. Marieme wants a lie that she and her community cannot envision because they are prevented from seeing beyond their socio-economic world by a variety of factors. By leaving her family, which we see is very hard for her, she is taking a step that few in her world take. At the end she has rejected her world completely and is totally alone. This is why she does not go home. What happens to her next is open to interpretation but she is a pioneer whether she succeeds or not. My main hope lat the end was with Marieme's middle sister.
