The French title actually means "Gang/Band/Posse of Girls"

I used to speak French reasonably fluently, able to go to French films that had no subtitles, but it's "use it or lose it", and these days I struggle to get even a few phrases out.

Nonetheless, I thought the English title was a complicated pun, on "boys in the 'hood", on hoodlums, gangbangers, gangsters – and, of course, a reference to teenage girls coming of age in a setting where petty crime, standovers etc, inevitably seems to lead to selling narcotics.

And then there are our anti-heroine's attempts to look and act more and more like a boy, a key element in the film only highlighted by the extraordinary performance from the first-time actress who oozes the soft energy of femininity even while desperate to gain the respect that only a masculine image seems able to convey.

Not to mention the opening shots of her playing American Football (in France!!) in that helmut-and-padding uniform, another image which strikingly juxtaposes a classically-masculine pastime with teenage girls emerging into womanhood.

Was their accent Parisian? It didn't sound like Parisian to me.
