The point of the hair weaves is that black women and girls are pressured to mimic white hair because historically and in the present day black women were/are taught that their natural hair is ugly. Black people have actually been fired from jobs for wearing their hair natural, so it's understandable. But these girls can't afford perms, so they wear weaves that don't look natural on them. I still think all of the girls in the film are gorgeous.

Thank God the trend is changing. I have no issue with women wearing weaves or extensions if they want to, but I think natural afro-textured hair is much more dynamic and beautiful.

By the way, a lot of white women wear weaves/wigs/extensions too. If you think white women in Hollywood really have hair that bouncy and full, you are mistaken.

Does that answer your stupid, sarcastic question?

For the record you didn't say anything I didn't already know. If it offended you boo hoo. White women wear extension of THEIR HAIR!!! Natural is cheaper. I grew up in the 70's and all you need was afro sheen so I know; but that doesn't change the fact that these woman were wearing cheesy weaves.

before i reply to your post i am a 26 yr old well educated black man with freeform locs.........the whole black women wear weave because the white man blah blah trash is...trash....know black history we were the 1st to do damn near everything.......including altering our appearance in the form of tattoos, piercings, and hair........we were the 1st to create and wear wigs, sew ins, and forms of weave.......so when beautiful black woman decide to relax their hair(which we were also the 1st to do albeit not in the same way done today) or use weave they are only doing what their ancestors did......before white people even had the chance to ridicule our hair we were altering it.......and this is coming from someone who prefers natural haired woman like me ;) but im educated and know that black women who wear weave arent imitating white people....they are doing what is a natural inclination for all human beings to do; alter themselves

Oh great, now it's my dick that's killing me

Nice try lilhatbandit but...
...as a college educated black woman over 40, I have to say cgraves is pretty much on the money. I have worn different weaves or extensions as well as perms or hot comb straightening over the years. From myself, my sisters and other women I know, the reason we do it is because women's hair that is considered pretty in general society is hair that frames your face in either curls, waves, or long hair, and those of us with african textured kinky hair won't do that without a lot of manipulation, and in many cases would not grow as long as we wished. I'm not sure what you mean by bringing up history, but if you mean in Africa's history, blacks altered their hair with braiding, they were not using very harsh chemicals or straight hair weaves in history. You have to admit that those of other races who do wear weaves and hairpieces are most often those in show biz, but there are more young black women, everyday people, wearing these things, than young women in any other race. I'm sorry but using extremely harsh chemicals, the hot comb, or putting a long haired weave made with hair from women of a different race, is done as an imitation of hair of other races. And lilhat, if we were the first to do wigs, sew ins, and relaxing, that would be because our hair type (a lot of us) is so extremely different from others that lended us to think it was inferior hence the seeking of how to change it. That's just what's real. And having had this be so commonly done, invites people like the OP to make joking or disparaging comments about it.

As info, I have been wearing sisterlocks for sixteen years, now taking those down to be even more natural with my hair.

you need to learn history im not talking 1920's im talking before our ancestors were even aware of the white and/or caucasian race...before their even were other races even we were creating wigs and sewing in dyed plants into our hair........and like i said we used different methods for straightening our hair back then than we do now but the point is we did it......so how can you say our young black women today are doing these things to imitate other races when our ancestors did it before they even encountered other races?......ask yourself why did our ancestors who back when they didnt even encounter other races heat up stones to in a sense flat iron their hair and create wigs and sew ins do these things?....its because they didnt need the white man who they have yet to encounter to tell them to alter their appearance....they didnt need to feel inferior to other races as they were apart of their own hierarchy...they werent trying to imitate anyone, only experiment and manipulate their hair to create unique new and varied looks.........so if you and your friends flat out are saying hey lets look like white woman and relax our hair then yea sorry for you guys but most of our black woman do it just to manipulate their hair....into something shiny and more easily managed........the idea of having straight and/or silky and/or manageable hair is appealing to our young black woman today like it was to those black woman(especially those in power or with status mind you) in the 1st civilizations ever to exist......clearly this is evidence that at the very least suggest if not proves that the intention of current day woman is not to imitate other races so much as to obtain this visually appealing hair texture that was sought after by our people before other races even existed yet...

suggesting that by manipulating our hair it must come from a sense of inferiority has psychological effects that may or may not of been intentional initiated ironically or tellingly ;) by caucaisans....imagine modern society both associating black textured hair with inferiority and the desire to manipulate that said hair into another texture as inferior?...well that would leave the black woman with no choice but to feel inferior wouldnt it?...or to force them to gain manufactured and often not organic confidence in their own texture creating a separatism mentality that some would argue breeds subconscious self inferiority since we as humans hate "not being part of the club"....fact is this idea that in order for us to change the actual texture of our hair or just the appearance of it we must feel inferior and therefore be trying to imitate superior looking races in regards to hair is both wrong and arguably more importantly detrimental to black society and is a very dangerous idea
