Why did Vic...

Why did she start dressing like a boy and try to squish down her boobs, plus cut her hair? I wondered if it was so Abou wouldn't push her into prostitution, but it seemed like he wasn't interested in that for her.

I honestly think that it has to do with the fact that for all of her life she was at the physical and emotional mercy of men (her older brother was both physically and emotionally abusive to her all her life), and throughout the movie, we see how the neighborhood boys treat her and her friends poorly based solely on the fact they are girls. In the opening scene where her and her football buddies are walking home at night, you can sense the fear and trepidation in them as the walk past the neighborhood boys. I don't think it has to do with the fact that she was gay or transgender, per se, I honestly think it has to do with the fact that as a young impressionable woman, she she started to realize there were advantages to behaving and acting more like a "man" to survive considering her circumstances.

It was an actually good detail of the movie and i am glad the director doesnt turn it into the homossexual side or at least leave the viewer at its own interpretation.
Despite of everything she was smart and sressing like a boy helped her to thrive more than others that ended up at the world of prostitution.
Those neighbourhoods are led by men and you need to hide your feelings to thrive.
I think she throughout the film always shows interest for boys but she has a plan even if she cant succeed
That plan didnt pass by simply marrying or get into prostitution.
Although how she will or not succeed after the system failed her (namely school) is smth that is left opened

Very much agree with both explanations. I didn't really see any lesbian aspect going on, personally. I think the kissing was just friendly affection.

I agree with all that's been said, but I want to add there was a hint at bisexuality with the kiss from her roommate and the dance scene at the party. There definitely was some curiosity there, partly triggered from the horrible exposure to men in her life.

I'm not sure. It's normal for women to greet each other with a kiss on the cheek in France and a lot of other European countries.

As for the dance, I thought it was more about trying to avoid Abou.

I'd read a review of the movie that mentioned that she did it because she was at that point, living with the guys and she wanted to make herself less sexually attractive to them and be seen as more of an equal. After the scene where she was changing in the car and the driver was glaring at her, it makes sense.

"Fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing."
