Funny thing is the movie just makes the art world seem even sillier.

So you have people that become obsessed with chasing a "forger" who hands out fake paintings for nothing... If the paintings are good enough to fool the supposed experts then what difference does it make? He isn't doing it for money... if anything he is actually providing more opportunities for people to see works of art... whether they are real or not doesn't matter.

Even more telling is they have an art expert that admits that the original artist would often paint multiple copies of the same thing, which really means that those copies are no different than the forgeries, they are just copies of the original... so doesn't that mean the art world is just being silly?

Da hole notion of a paintin worf millionz is silly. I can appreciate da visual appeal but if I hang a copy of da Mona lisa in my room, it worx either its a copy or orig unless u look at it wid a magnifier. No need 2 pay millionz 4 an orig. I think ppl who do dis just have too much moula or like 2 show off

It's a bit silly to say that Landis' copies are the exact same as the original painter's copies as they are inherently different things. But yeah, I agree that the art world seems a bit butthurt at being duped. Like the FBI guy said, if he didn't accept money for them it's not a crime and it's really the museums' own fault for allowing themselves to be tricked so easily.

Collectors of any rare objects, breeders of purebred animals, etc., would totally disagree with you.

While I understand your point, it's still false to claim that artists who make more than one copy is equivalent to a forger whose only talent is to make copies (including with a photocopier). The museum curators who received the artwork werent experts, and were cowed into submission by Mark's deceptions and apparent goodwill. They're guilty for not researching him and the artwork. I dont see how this makes the "art world" (whatever you meant by that) look silly.

It's too bad Mark's motives werent articulated more by him. As it stands, it looks like he's feeding a bottomless pit that was never filled in childhood.
