The Ending -SPOILER- Where Does She Go??

Great acting, but really confusing ending.

She comes home, after being robbed, beat up and almost raped. She makes sandwiches for her kids. Her husband glares at her from upstairs. She looks at him, and then walks out the door. Huh? Where does she go? I hate these open-endings, because this was a story that deserved better closure. I felt cheated. Any interpretation?

I took the ending to mean she will probably kill herself. She looked at her husband to see if there was any glimmer of hope and he just glared at her. Marriage is over, life is over. She off's herself.

One probable interpretation is that she's following the footsteps of her father by walking out of the family.

Totally agree with "home again"'s post above.

Yes I agree, that a dumb ending...I don't think they knew how to end it...

Did anyone read the book this movie was based on. Does the book explain the ending better?

reply

I'm reading the book but not hoping for much difference - so far it's following the movie very closely.

My best guess is she goes to Atlantic City and starts hooking to feed her $40-50 a day drug habit.

There is a documentary (might be on youtube now) called "Atlantic City Hookers..." that featured an interview with a woman who left her own 7 year old son and loving husband because of her drug addiction she just couldn't (or wouldn't) shake - and she expected to be dead in less than a year via suicide.

I finished the book.

Interesting the differences between the film and the book.

She DOES have sex with the "Jesus" looking character - but he's a cabana guy in the Miami hotel where they are staying for that national insurance conference, rather than upstate NY. And then she's an hour late for dinner that night and hubby knows what she was doing - drugs and another guy. They both fly back home together and he doesn't leave her at all for another trip.

Basically, in the book hubby never does leave her or force her out by word or deed. The movie made him more a "hardass bad guy." She gets beat-up by the guy she picks up in the bar and allows to have anal sex with her - but someone calls 911 and she gets an ambulance ride to the ER and stitches and treatment. She is in a cab going home when she sees her lovely house and thinks to herself "I almost had it all." And then tells the cabbie to keep driving. And that's it.

What are the differences?

I don't know where she went, probably to another bar.

The movie wasn't bad, but the ending completely ruined it for me. It left me wishing I hadn't even watched it. I deducted 2 stars from my rating, only because of the ending.

It was one of those endings that always makes me think after 1 1/2 to 2 hours, regardless of where they are in the story, the director says, "Oh I see we now have enough here for a full-length film, so thanks everyone, you can all go home now."

It would be nice if we could get a warning on these kinds of films before watching. Something like, "Warning: Ambiguous ending!" That way, everyone who dislikes that type of ending could just skip it.

Sing until your throat hurts, dance until your legs hurt, act until you're William Hurt.

I interpreted the ending as: every day is a struggle for someone with depression and addiction. There won't be some definite conclusion - especially at the end of an 80 minute film. You just have to take on all the battles that come along with it (or sometimes, you can't) one day at a time.

Maybe she finally hit her rock bottom and checks into rehab again.

She obviously goes to see Dr. House, did you not see the episode "Mommies little helper" or whatever it was called where a mom was taking drugs and got sick?
