What? This was a spot on characterization of an addict. Just because Laney's behaviour was morally reprehensible doesn't mean Silverman's performance was by any means shoddy. Get a grip.

I disagree that the husband was unsympathetic.
Anyone who has lived with an addict or someone who with mental illness would have a lot of sympathy for what the husband has to endure -- including a woman who disappears for long periods, snorts cocaine in front of the kids, and gets beat up after having sex with a stranger.

This is one of the most horrible things you can say to someone who is depressed. Depressed people are often called selfish because of ignorance. How can a person care for others when they can't take proper care of themselves. Selfish? Absolutely not. She did nothing for pleasure or gain, most of her actions were to dull the pain that she feels.
