What's unique about it?

I know it sounds like an odd question but every film that Robert Zemeckis makes involves an innovative use of effects. For example:

- Who Framed Roger Rabbit was the first to combine animation and live action without the use of green screen

- The Polar Express, Beowulf and Christmas Carol all used Zemeckis' image movers technology which scans an actors face and combines it with animation.

- The Walk had near perfect cgi in the pivotal scene where Petit walks across the Twin Towers. It's realism caused a lot of people to suffer from Vertigo.

- Death Becomes Her used a lot of digital effects for the contortions of the two female characters limbs.

You get the point. So far, there has been nothing to suggest that his innovative technology will play a big role. But given that Image Movers is one of the production companies behind 'Allied', I was wondering whether the film would feature dead actors. The style of the film seems reminiscent of Casablanca and other war/spy films of the time. Will we see an appearance from Humphrey Bogart or Peter Lorre perhaps?

What are your thoughts?

Does he always need to use gimmicks?

Well, as I said in the examples, he usually does. The only one that springs to mind that doesn't is Flight. But even then, it does contain the famous airplane scene near the beginning of the film.

I haven't heard of any new special effects technology in the works. Before Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump, Avatar, Polar Express, and other films with unique tech came out they 'showcased' the effects in mini-documentaries and such, so I doubt we'll see anything beyond 'better' CGI than last years films. Bogart already made an appearance 20 years ago in a Zemeckis directed episode of Tales from the Crypt, so that wouldn't really be unique.
As someone who thought the Bogie episode, along with his stretch of CGI movies were more gimmicky spectacles than anything else, I'm just hoping for a good story.
