Of all things you conclude it's US law that makes no sense. This movie was based on a book set in London, written by an english woman and she wasn't getting alimony, her mother lent her money for the rent. You get money if you have no prenup and married to someone rich and bore them a child or put your life on hold in some way to support them.

While maintenance / alimony isn't routine - it does happen in the USofA and I know of it personally.

Silly for the OP to claim otherwise.

because USA love womans.

reply

Because he clearly kept the house.. so she needed to be paid alimony.

The threat of having to make alimony and/or child support payments are big reasons why guys aren't getting married anymore.

I have a brain and good taste, so no, I'm not part of the target demographic.

So you say men decide when marriage happens but that women are unreasonable for wanting CHILD SUPPORT. Jesus christ...

reply

Not really sure what you're saying here. Obviously men don't decide when marriage happens - it takes one person to ask and the other to accept. If a man asks and the woman says no then obviously that marriage is not happening, so no, it's not up to the man (unless the couple is two men). Everyone decides for themselves when marriage happens, male or female.

All I'm saying is men are avoiding marriage and opting to just live with someone because they know there's a good chance the marriage will end in divorce, which means alimony payments and if there are kids it also means child support. If a couple who are just living together decide to split, there's no worry about alimony, only about whether or not he'll get his CD collection back.

I have a brain and good taste, so no, I'm not part of the target demographic.

Women would pay alimony and child support if they made more money than the man. Society needs to make that more prevalent before you can complain about poor men.

reply

I don't know where you live, but even if you're not married, have a child and then split you still pay child support.

That's what alimony is.

Child support goes to children, alimony goes to ex-spouses.

reply

Who would you expect alimony to be paid to? A young girl? How are US laws the "strange" in this conversation?

reply

We don't have child brides in the US anymore, so of course you pay alimony to grown women.

reply

The main reason most women get married is for the money, the babies, the security, etc. So, when the divorce inevitably happens, it's time to cash in.
