"The Girl on the Train" is TRASH. Avoid It.

I just got out from seeing it and boy was it bad. It was entertaining in a trashy way, yes. But it was bad. I don't get how anyone could think this is Oscar material. It's BAD. I also don't get how anyone can compare this to GONE GIRL. That movie was well written, well acted and well directed with great cinematography and dialogue. This was cheesy and trashy, like some made for TV movie only uncensored.

Emily Blunt gave a good performance finally (IMHO) but she overacts a lot and it's too trashy to ever think it has Oscar chance. It honestly felt like a soap opera. I am so disappointed (even though I knew it would be bad but not this bad).

To the people that read the book, how did you think this would be an Oscar contender?

My theaters reaction was same as mine overall. People sighed at the end, the guys next to me said it was a POS and as we walked out people were complaining about it, one saying there was "too much going on for one movie".

See it if you want but believe me, it's NOT worth it. My theater was PACKED by the way. And there were people standing outside asking if it was good and many said NO.

I was pumped to see it but some friends just got out the 7pm show here and they said it stunk, which is a shame and I cannot take yet another disappointing movie in a year of crap and letdowns.
Was it at least laughably bad? Like on a Valley of the Dolls level?
Plus I've heard the word exploitation thrown around when describing this movie.
Is that accurate?

reply

Exploitative can def fit in with this movie.

It's not "so bad it's good" like Valley if the Dolls or comical. It's BAD as in you role your eyes and get annoyed and start looking at the time to see how much longer you have.

It's a soap opera being sold in film form. Bad.

I saw it last night at 7pm and boy was it BAD. The theater was practically sold out and when it ended people sounded upset actually. The entire row in front of me got up and started whining. As I was leaving people were complaining about how stupid it was and while standing outside I heard people very upset with it.

Its bad. I regretted spending $15.50 on this instead of something else.

reply

The book isn't all that good either.

reply

When three out of four critics just hate a movie, you better believe it's bad.

reply

Except it really isn't anywhere near as bad as you make it out to be.

Hope changes everything.

reply

I thought it was very suspenseful and fine!

From the director of "The Help", and that won some Oscars..

I thought all of the women were good here, Emily Blunt, Allison Janney, Lisa Kudrow, Rebecca Furguson, and Haley Bennett (who was in a cheesy thriller that I also liked, "Haunting of Molley Hartley",2008).

My theatre was also packed as well. I sat near the top row.

Don't understand all the hate. I thought it was a very decent thriller and definitely one of the better films of the year. It started a little slow, but soon it connected and I was hooked. The twist was not mindblowing but still well done in my opinion.

reply

Oh and Emily Blunt gave a great performance, Oscar worthy no doubt.

reply

I have no idea why some people are saying she overacted. That is literally nonsense. She was perfect as the character. The movie had flaws no doubt but Emily was NOT one of them. Makes me think that some of these people don't know what they're like when they're drunk or something. XD

Whatever the weather my ass! It's hot as hell out here!

reply

I think the point is they were aiming to make Gone GIrl 2.0 and there were some very obvious references in terms of its execution.

But you're right, they failed.

reply

I went in expecting a good movie and I left thankful it had finally ended. I love thrillers, but this was legit bad. Probably one of the worst movies I have ever witnessed. It was the only movie I have ever thought about just getting up and leaving.

I almost walked out also

So what were the other 2 movies you have seen?

reply

I don't understand how it could be THAT bad. I haven't seen it but am going to.
However, a lot of the book was boring and needlessly repetitive. Rachel is such a sad character, never figuring out what to do to save herself.

so from that standpoint I can see how this might be a boring movie.

Because it's not. People claiming this is among the worst ones they have ever seen have either lead a very sheltered life and watched a total of 10 movies tops, or - somewhat more likely - exaggerating to a very poor effect.

I'd say this is a solid enough flick, an average rating of 5 or 6 out of 10 would seem bang on. Acting is good and it's well directed & edited avoiding excess fluff which keeps it from becoming boring at any point during the very reasonable run time. The story isn't bomb-proof and the "twist" is rather wishy-washy, watering it down towards the end as suspense is gone and the mood changes considerably.

I watched it without having read the book; I'd probably go see it even if I had read the original story.

reply

You should see it. I really liked it, but I agree that I didn't like the book either. I found that in the book, Rachel was very tedious with her alcoholic escapades. The movie is stripped down. Entertainment Weekly gave it an A-.

This movie was awful. You weren't wrong here, OP.
