Would you call this a 'chick-flick'

Asking because the audience ratios at my screening was heavily in favour to women

reply

No, I wouldn't label as a "chick-flick" at all. I'd say the audience in mind for films like this is anyone who enjoys mysteries/thrillers/whodunits, rather than just a particular gender.

Hope changes everything.

reply

Agreed! audience in my theatre 50/50 men and women. Like UpperEastSider said, this film is for anyone who enjoys these kind of crime mysteries.

reply

Chic flick is such a pejorative term, but I think the movie was women centered. That does not stop it from being a really good movie, better than the book.

I notice most of the negative comments are by males. It is disheartening to know that there is so much hatred of women in the US. Men expect us to love buddy flicks and I do. Deliverance is one of my favorites and most films are about the exploits of males. Too bad that men cannot show us the same basic respect.

reply

There's the pot calling the kettle black.
It seems that you have a hatred towards males over a movie that that may not be a good movie in general despite the gender of the leads which is the only thing some people care about and not the quality of the movie.
What would you say to the women who give negative comments to this movie? I'm sure your responses to them would be a whole lot worse for not supporting your opinions.

Is "buddy flicks" also a pejorative term? The double standards are getting really tiring.

reply

Except nobody says "buddy flicks" and everybody says "chick flicks", and usually it's a negative term. Sorry dude but I'm with her on this one.

reply

It has nothing to do with the gender. It just happened that people with brain hated the movie for poor acting and lack of thrill or mystery. I'm sorry, but you're the one with no brain.

reply

Gee, Alex904, I always always speak well of you.

I didn't accuse anyone having no brain. I accept and appreciate honest critiques of any movie. I do myself all the time. I have debated it on this board.

However, I respectfully disagree with you about it being poor acting and lack of thrills and mystery. I read the book which I didn't like because of Rachel's tedious alcoholic exploits. Got boring. I think the director and writer stripped it down to the basic plot and my friend and I throughly enjoyed it and were so glad we didn't skip it because of a couple unenthusiastic reviews. Entertainment Weekly gave it an A- which is good for that publication.

I just reject the instant rejection of some male posters. We girls recognize it when we see it. It's the Trump effect.

I hope you feel better.

reply

That review was by a, you guessed it, a female. More like the Hillary effect- vote for me, not cause I know what I'm doing, just because I have a vagina. FWBW

LOL - so if a man dislikes this movie it means he hates women? That's good - tell me another. 

reply

I would not call this a chick flick.
Call it what is which is a mystery thriller.
Nothing more and nothing less.

reply

I agree with you, CelluloidAdmirer

Of course it is, lol. Those who say otherwise are just in denial.

reply

No, not really. It was good but could have been better. I didn't end up caring about any of the characters.

reply

Just saw the movie and I would have to say that 70% of the audience was women. Even tho there are some parts of the movie that feel "chick flicky" I wouldn't say that the movie is that overall. Its a mystery/thriller, and a decent one too.

reply

Nah, it's a suspense thriller.

•¤ What can the damned really say to the damned? ¤•

reply

No. It has a female lead but its appeal is not near-exclusive towards women. The same is true with Gone Girl. I'm male and thought it was a solid film.
