its heart was in the right place but ...
It wasn't a great film it had some really interesting ideas that didn't gel together but it wasn't unwatchable or awful it was mainly let down by just looking really cheap and with it not being shot on film like the others it will visually be the black sheep of the franchise
What I did like was the dementia stuff with Reggie and was actuallysomwhat emotional and we got to see a difrent side to mike in these scene's the acting was at its best at these moments I also really liked the bit where jebbadia was in the bed next to Reggie was again creepy and also sad
But with this also comes what I disliked about the film why did the focuse shift from mike after how the 4th film ended I thought we was going to have a thing or two explained about the ball that was removed from mikes head and also the whole mike being groomed to be the next tall man being completely dropped from the narrative instead it filled Reggie asif he has been the protagonist the whole time which aside from phantasm 3 I don't really feel this was the case with the series as a whole
Moving the focus to Reggie undercuts the previous 4 films and what thay seamed to be setting up. So many intresting hints came from phantasm 4 that have not been followed up on in this which sadly makes it seam like that have been making up what the story is about in each film and eluding to stuff that will never be awnserd
But I do get the impression from this film that effort was put in to it and despite not having the tools to fulfill what it wanted to do it did at least try so I can't say it was awful just it didn't achieve what it was setting out to do one could argue that after the 1st film this has been something that the sequels has sufferd from . like 2 losing its dream like quality and 3 not getting its red planet sequences and 4 being a prelude to phantasms end that never got made and this one for just not having a budget to work with
But hay ho it was good to see the guys back in action at least one more time even if that was hindered by that annoying dwarf character and the awful CGI and that bloody rap music on the credits wtf
