Play live ?

Somebody know if the band play live in the movie ?

I think yes... but I´m not sure.

Not a chance.

It's literally never done, for several good technical reasons.

and many times when you see a crowd dancing in movies, there is never really actual music playing when they film them dancing, because of technical reasons as well. They edit in the music afterwards.

Yes I know this is so complex. I´m no profesional musician and I know about basic techniques of music and video.

I´m asking because I have noticed about some small details like some hits with the chopsticks for example very very synchronized.

In the same way the guitar solo are so synchronized too. (I´m guitar player).

I thought maybe they record live the band sound and them shoot other open or more distance image with they playing and the people dancing with this original sound.

I repeat because my english is not good.
Close-up live music.
Open image no.

no need to get touchy. I wasn't even responding directly to you. You took my response as too personal when I was agreeing with what the other poster stated, and even offered some info about something else that many people don't realize. It wasn't a dig on you and had nothing to do with what you even posted.

No problem, no problem.
All is fine. :)

Thanks

That's just not so. They do this live sometimes. Including in this movie.

It seems as though the OP set off a panel of "experts". Saying that something like recording the music live with the scene is "just not done" is as if you are speaking for every director in the industry. Certainly there are some directors who would never risk filming the sound "live" but this director was going for a more "relaxed" live music feel. I thought many of the earlier band scenes were performed sloppily intentionally, to give the feeling of an unpolished lounge band. I thought "Drift Away" sounded much more polished than the other performances. I just wonder how many takes it took.

By the way original poster, sus english es muy bien.

I would have thought so, as everybody in the band were actual musicians. Rick Springfield, Bernie Worrell, Joe Vitale and Meryl herself who can sing and play guitar. Plus Jonathan Demme likes to film musicians playing live.

OK, thanks..!

Yes, on the DVD special feature, they talk about playing live, that it's the only way to really make the music scenes authentic. Also, Streep refers to singing and playing live in several interviews.

Your English, by the way, is okay.

Oh..!! I was on the right way ...!!

Thanks so much...!

Not a chance.

You can't get isolation like that with open mics.

They're just lying for the sake of the movie.

I'm watching it now and you can tell they're playing live during Drift Away. Multiple cameras and hidden mics. Frankly, I wish more movies would employ live performances for concert scenes. Another one that does it is They All Laughed (1981).

A lot of strange things happen in this world. Things you don't know about in Grand Rapids.

reply

Meryl Streep and Rick Springfield both said they did.
