Don't think it was a scandal. I think they just didnt expect her band to be any good.

I was talking about the shuts on guest faces.. more or less saying: What f. is this ?

yes, I know. But the guest essentially saw Ricki/ Linda as someone who ran off on her kids. Maybe an alcoholic/ maybe a drug addict. They didnt expect her and her band to have any talent. The only people who seemed "upset" were the new in-laws. The rest of the guest had that akward well theres music playing.

reply

Wel.. it is posible, but IMO the problem is the script was pretty unrealistic.

Brides usually plan their weddings to the nth degree. Having the groom's flaky, abandoning mother show up and hijack the reception would be upsetting to a bride of any social class.

reply

I thought that was odd, too. The shocked reaction of some wedding guests as the music started playing was so out of place, and mostly from the older guests. These are people in an age group which should have grown up with rock music. It wasn't just a reaction to something unexpected in the wedding events; they were clearly scandalized by the music itself. It was pretty unrealistic.

There was one couple that the camera kept showing during the Springsteen song that looked downright annoyed that they were good. They showed them sitting there while everyone else was getting up to dance and I was just like what the actual f? Like they had some sort of grudge against the band. Really weird and random.

It really was weird - more like something that belongs in Footloose. I suppose they wanted to emphasize how out of place Ricki was in this situation; but even haughty upper class older people are still very familiar with rock music, and most of them have it played at their weddings.

Those were the new in-laws. If you noticed they walked the bride down the aisle and stood there greeting the guest with the bride and groom.

Honestly, I think they're the reason Ricki wasnt invited in the first place. If you notice their daughter was trying to be snobbing like them.

yes, this is the problem with the script it was pretty unrealistic.

Another contrived plot device in a very weak film.

Many weddings are "over planned" today. A bride put in that situation would most likely feel that the new mother-in-law stepped over her boundaries. Usually after they have a couple of drinks they relax and everything is cool. It's supposed to be a celebration, not a choreographed ritual.
