Good grief meryl. What was she thinking?

I love meryl's films and high hopes for this. Mrs Thatcher and Florence foster Jenkins was brilliance but this? It was cringe worthy watching her sing at the end and that dance! Who advises her that this would be good for her. She clearly is surrounded by too many 'yes' people. She really should stick to what she does best. Wasted two hours of my life on this middle class American crap. Couldn't care less about their dysfunctional pathetic family dynamics that turns all lovey dovey at the end. Truly woeful.

You should probably stick to absurdist British comedies like "Trainspotting" or "Snatch", those are probably ideas you can identify with.

I certainly agree about the OP's snotty comment about Americans. The Brits produce plenty of trashy films and tv themselves.

But, I absolutely agree about Meryl Streep's cringe-making performance in this terrible film. I couldn't finish watching it, Streep was the worst thing in the movie. She is a wonderful actress, I've enjoyed many of her films. But she went way over the top here.

She was "in character", if you had seen the whole movie you might understand.

I apologise. I didn't aim this at Americans. It could have been an English family equally. I love Americans and America! It was the acting and story i hated, not you!

You just didn't get it. I'd suggest watching it again in twenty years or so, and you might, for film has a way of doing that.

Streep loves to sing on film, in any capacity as we've seen not only with Mamma Mia and Into the Woods, but also Silkwood, Ironweed, Postcards from the Edge and Death becomes Her.

Combined with the chance to reteam with Jonathan Demme,(who directed her in The Manchurian Candidate), her fellow Sophie's Choice co-star, Kevin Kline and her daughter, the opportunity was just too good to pass up.

Sort of like Bette Davis's performance in Baby Jane, Streep playing Ricki was a break from the norm and she made the most of every moment.

I'd also suggest you buy a copy of Plenty if you haven't seen it before. Perhaps my favorite Streep performance.

I'm a Streep fan but this movie will only get more embarrassing for everyone with time. Total miss.

I get why Meryl would do this movie, but all that doesn't make up for her weird, over-the-top performance. I didn't think I could ever dislike her, as an actor, in anything. But 'Ricki' proved me wrong.

I won't be watching it again.

Oh, pity. I'm sure the folks over at Blockbuster are heartbroken you won't be back anytime soon to pick up your VHS rental of 'Ricki and the Flash'- I saw this movie with my grandmother in a crowded theatre on opening weekend. We were the only two in attendance who found it amusing, apparently, so you do hace company in your feelings about the movie. We laughed, giggled and smiled through most of the film, while the rest of the theatre sat blank faced. Meryl was a hoot. We had a ball, I really liked this one. Loved? No. Enjoyed? Yes.

I agree ... and why she did it is beyond me ... You would think that the people making it could have seen what an awful movie this was going to be .. I mean you and I could have told them .. and then they could have moved on to something else ... lol .. Peace to you my friend .

I think Meryl just wanted to rock out and have fun with her daughter. I happened to be going through channels and saw her with Kevin Kline again and had to watch.
Was it an indulgent film? Yep. Was it special like Sophies Choice? No!
I suppose Miss Street is allowed to have fun now and then... she's certainly earned it.
