Okay, i have to know!! (SPOILERS)

Sorry, I was bored at work one day and (I never read the book or saw the movie) I read about it on Wikipedia. Is it true that Margo made all those clues and had the kid (Quint or whatever) run all over town looking for her and when he finally found her, he told her how he felt, she didn't feel the same way and so they all just went on with their lives? I mean, I know you don't get the full effect of something just by reading Wikipedia, but that just sounds SO BORING to me!! I do apologise if you liked it I'm really not trying to bash the book or movie but the whole story just seems so "what is the freaking point??!!" to me. Was there a hidden meaning or lesson in any of it?! Thank you for the help!!!
