Dissapointing. **SPOILERS **

Just watched it and overall I'm dissapointed with it.

Big problem for me was that it was boring. Nothing really happens.

Plot - bunch of squaddies camped out watching a damn, sniper wants to shoot some bad guys that are out of range so gets a few mates and goes a bit closer then they walk into a mine field, get injurred and call for back up. Back up arrives and more people get blown up by mine field. Then they get rescued. The end.

Probably was pretty exciting to have been there but that doesn't make it a good film.

I was impressed by the realistic squaddie lifestyle shown and attention to detail was very good. I was hoping to see a battle along the same lines as in the book Sniper One but nope.

I presume this will not be a popular opinion as all the threads so far seem to worship this film. And I get it, it's a real event and people actually got injured and died. I watched this film expecting to be entertained and found it boring. Sorry.

Hope the same team get to do another film with what I consider to be a more interesting plot.

Edit: I gave it 6 BTW, so I thought the film was ok but was just expecting more when I was impressed by everything apart from the plot.

That's harsh man REAL harsh subjecting people to such horrors... You must be demon posessed to try put people through that kind of thing.

Before watching this film next week, let me just say the situations these guys were in was as far from "boring" as you can get. If you have ever been anywhere near a dangerous situation in your Life, you would know this, but seems from your post, probably not.

reply

Nothing really happens??????????? The plot?????????? The film was based on a true story and accurately as well. I despair at times I really do.

reply

You are not alone in your despair. For the very young generations these days, everything but everything must be spelled out for them. Bodes far from well for the future as it points to slow development or non-development of initiative.
Still, two days from now, will be our Sovereign's Birthday Parade (this year, the Welsh Guards)and if you can watch that without swelling with pride, and more, then I have indeed lost Hope for the future. These young lads will emphatically not make you feel despair.
The British Army at its ceremonial best, and that's an understatement.

The movie is quite interesting and very intense (especially after the first mine went off). Some of the things I don't like are the excessive cursing, the over-the-top hollering, crying and yelling, and some of the poorly scripted lines (which maybe only interesting to the British audiences and/or those who were there but not to the general public or foreign audiences). To me, this movie is anything but boring. It deserves at least a 7.5, and at most an 8.5.

reply

Well, firstly, we Brits can curse a lot, especially in the Forces. Do bear in mind these guys lives' are on the line, so by any interpretation, quite stressful.
Crying & yelling too much for your delicate soul? Ever seen men with limbs blown off or been near anyone in extreme pain? I have. You'd holler too, believe me!

I am British and I couldn't understand half the things they were saying, but that's not a problem of poor script, that's just how they talk! Very thick Scottish accents and plenty of army talk - acronyms all over the place - that if you've not been in the military yourself you probably wouldn't know half of what they were saying. I had to turn subtitles on eventually and realised that every time they were shouting "Kassivak", they were actually saying "cas evac" which makes more sense even though I still only have half a clue of what that is.

As for the swearing, wow I laughed at that comment. I can imagine, a soldier who's just had his limbs blown off, told to mind if he wouldn't mind not swearing so much. :-)

reply

Well I feel much better about having to turn on the subtitles now ! After ten minutes of watching this I realized I had no idea what was going on because i only understood a handful of words. I figured, maybe if I was British I could understand them, apparently not.

reply

I'm English and after about half an hour I turned in the subtitles. Great film btw.

people stop bitching and let the man have an opinion

reply

I agree wholeheartedly. Your point about the lack of story was well-taken. Also, the characters were not developed enough for the viewer to care about them (or even tell them apart!). The fruit salad-eating doctor was the only memorable one of the bunch.

It looks like some viewers are getting their patriotism, nationalism, and/or memories mixed up with their artistic appreciation. This was a fairly standard movie and by no means a classic (time will prove me right). I had to fast forward this thing at some points, which automatically makes me give it a point less. 5/10

reply

This movie had nothing to do with patriotism or nationalism. It wasn't even anti-war for that matter.

I am not sure how you completely missed it since it is not that complicated. This was a movie about soldiers.

reply

Yeah, it's a movie about soldiers, but if it wasn't based on a true story it would be a pretty boring moving. Nothing against the people who went threw this, but for a movie, watching people go into a valley and step on a landmine and then watch a hour of them waiting to get rescued isn't that entertaining.

reply

I found the suspense of whether or not the next move would cost somebody their limb/life very tense, and therefore for me, very entertaining.

reply

Well then I guess for some there is no sense in showing extraordinary bravery and strength of spirit in the face of human tragedy and suffering unless it has battles and intrigue like the Die Hard films.

And I hope you misspoke because only a fool would think it "pretty exciting" to have been there.

reply

I don't understand any of the comments that it's boring or flat. There's plenty of conversation, we totally get the impression what each of the main characters is like, the environment they live in, their hopes and dreams, etc. You do have to listen, but there it is.

And then, an awful lot of people get blown up. And much of the time between those explosions is spent worrying that any old thing will cause more explosions. I think I lost a year off my life from the stress of watching it and waiting for the next disaster to befall them.

I thought it was unfathomably well done in every way. One of the best movies I have seen. I don't give out a lot of 10s, and this one -- much to my surprise -- counts. Amazing film.

I guess real life is boring because it doesn't have a soundtrack, flashbacks, and training montages?

reply

its people who spent all their time either playing games where they are killing the enemy every 5 seconds or expect something like a James Bond film. Actually real warfare is probably 95% boredom and 5% sheer terror. I have heard accounts of soldiers in Afghan being sick with fear before patrols - the human spirit aspect is that they overcome it and do their job. Those who combat experience is Call of Duty will never understand that
