Failed art house horror movie student project?

This seemed like a failed attempt at some kind of arty alternative New Yorker social commentary packed into a remake of a mainstream American horror movie (Quarantine) which was actually a remake of a Spanish horror movie (REC) and failed.
All the characters were basically stereotypical archetypes of what some like to say is the "true New York" - like the model turned junkie who didn't realize she was a junkie - just thought she was voluntarily taking some time away from a highly successful modeling career to recharge her batteries before going back....unemployed musicians convinced that they are on the brink of superstardom....a grab bag of people with varied sexual fetishes/interests, a lampooned portrayal of an asian man....the list goes on.....
and while it all seemed funny on the surface, i really got the feeling that the writer or director or whoever else involved was trying to make some deep kind o statements with all those moments that seemed comical.
visually the movie was actually quite well done, the main storyline has been done twice before - and it didn't succeed in being a truly horror-comedy because of what seems like a whole lot of subtext.
