Haven't seen the film yet, so I'm assuming the similarities...
In Italy, in 1963, at the Vajont dam. Wave of 250m height overtopped the dam (itself 262m high) after a landslide, which had been predicted. Whole town wiped out, almost 2000 died.

I just watched a doco on the Vajont Dam. Such a tragic loss of life but at least the people building dams now use the mistakes they made there as tools to learn from.
