Any ideas on how to reboot the Jem franchise?

I'm hearing a lot of complaints but not a lot ideas of what exactly would have been than this film. What exactly do you want? What exactly would you want a Jem reboot to be? If I had my way Jem would be a musical comedy-drama but musical comedy-drama that was surreal, metaphysical, and allegorical. While the Hasbro cartoon was pure fantasy and the movie (which btw wasn't that terrible) and the comics were more grounded in reality, this Jem reboot would combine both fantasy and reality. A great soundtrack combined with an innovative visual style would make it this generation's Yellow Submarine. Well, those are my ideas anyway.

This movie had decent pop music and the acting was actually not bad at all; but it failed so spectacularly because there was zero conflict in the movie. The only thing resembling conflict (the band break-up) was resolved in exactly six minutes of movie run time. The rest of the movie is spent on that idiotic scavenger hunt and watching these girls get everything handed to them. They never go through any kind of obstacle to their stardom. It's given to them and they stay on top. You can't be emotionally invested in Mary Sue characters that don't experience any lasting turmoil.

It also failed because there was no focus. That scavenger hunt is one of the most insanely idiotic things I've ever seen on film. It also leads to one of the most anticlimactic resolutions ever. Basically, what I take from watching all of it is that Jerrica's father was a moron.

TLDR: This movie had a lot of problems that were all due to horrible writing.

@Xenomaster Yes, the movie had a lot of problems, but still there were some things that I thought film actually did well. As you mentioned the pop music was decent and the performances were actually quite good. And I also like to the fact the characters were now teenagers with a rags to riches story. In fact, if the decide to make another Jem cartoon they should take some elements from the live action film and try to do it better.

That's the thing, though. It wasn't rags to riches. They were living in an absurdly big house with 18 different wardrobes in their garage, MacBooks, musical instruments out the wazoo (trust me, those are NOT cheap), and recording equipment. There is no semblance of anything that would lead us to believe they're poor. And from about the 15-minute mark, they are famous pop stars. They just become famous instantly and never have any kind of real problem after this.

Okay, but so what? So what if the original wasn't a rags to riches story, not everything has to be like the original in order for it to be a good adaptation.

And maybe that explains all the changes made in the film. It's not very interesting to watch people have no problems whatsoever after they become famous.

You misunderstood me completely. I have never watched the cartoon. Not even one episode. What I said was: this movie is not a rags-to-riches story because the girls are clearly not poor.

@Xenomaster I think you have to watch the movie again, because at the beginning they mentioned how money is tight right before we found out they're about to be evicted from their home. Social class isn't something that's fixed, with just a string of bad luck someone from a middle class suburbs can become poor.

Then sell your musical instruments. Or your insane number of clothes. Get part-time jobs to help your aunt pay for the mortgage or groceries. There are plenty of ways to fix their "problem".

reply

@Xenomaster None of that would have solved the problem. It would be nice to have some extra cash but it's doubtful that it helped them save their home. Well, maybe if they sold the robot.

reply

I think they should just leave it alone.

reply

@anxiety attack Fair enough, but it would be a waste if they did.

Sounds to me like retro4 is just grasping at straws to justify hollywood's defecating out all these stupid reboots.

reply

@helixth How am I grasping at straws? By using a thing called logic?

The movie should've been able to bridge the gap between old and new fans.

They should've just made it more of a mockumentary or 'Behind the Music'/Where Are They Now kind of thing where Jem and the Holograms...and by extension the Misfits, were HOT groups at some point in time but then...they werent. So they broke up and became successes somewhere else (and) eventually they mount a reunion tour (or some big event that they must reunite for) but the only holdout is the elusive Jem whom no one except for those closest to her really knew who she was.

When there's no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.

I would have made it Starlight house is going to lose it's licensing to remain open as a foster home from the State...unless JEM and the Holograms successfully raise enough money to keep it open and properly licensed.

But Pizzazz and the Misfits are going to attempt to mess things up!! They don't like goody-goody music groups after all!!

There you go....instant conflict.
