Comment about Americans

Great movie! However, I found the comment that Die makes about Americans unnecessary: she complains about an American company basically taking advantage of her family by buying her late husband's invention too cheap. She then says Americans steal everything. First of all, if the American company offered too little money, why didn't they sell the invention to a local company that offered more? Obviously the American company was offering the best price. Second, doesn't capitalism work similarly in most countries? Are Canadian companies more generous when they buy patents? Why point to Americans, specifically? I'm not American, by the way. I just felt the director was trying to make some sort of empty political point.

A political point yes but not empty. I imagine the Canadian-American relationship is not easy for Canadians.

You may be over-thinking this. Die has had limited education; she's not likely to have a firm grasp of economic theory/patent law. Also, she's probably not particularly knowledgeable about the United States, so it's easy for her to accept them as generic bad guys.

I didn't take it as a political point, but rather, more a case of how people easily find scapegoats for their own economic problems.

scapegoats for their own economic problems.

right right US imperialism doesnt exist at all right right ;)

reply

For me US imperialism clearly exists, so it has also become a stereotype for non-educated people to use as an argument. It was not an empty point. Anybody who has researched the dark side of the USA probably understands.
