I didn't know anything about it when I started watching it. But having seen enough Dr. Who episodes, I caught on about halfway through that this was actually a sci-fi. So why the dislike? I actually liked it way more that it had a nice twist to the usual supernatural *beep* horror.
I find the bait-and-switch to be fun. They do this a lot in Dr. Who (hate to mention it again). It starts off as a 'supernatural' thing, and turns out to be sci-fi related. Then again, you know Dr. Who is a sci-fi. I kind of agree, based on the name, I was rather in snooze mode for the first half, so missed a lot of the clues. I guess that's the drawback of the name. Still, if I had known at least that it was 'something different' I'd have enjoyed it even more. I don't think it deserves a low score though, it ain't bad. Definitely not at 5-6 level.
I didn't finish this the first time I tried it. It looked not only standard, but stupid. I didn't bother rating it but my number would have been in line with its overall score... which might explain the overall score.
Then I kind of had to finish because I was watching as a social activity, and oh my, when you get to finding out it's so much more than a straightforward horror, it's so touching and so beautifully done, and so well acted, it just left me crying. I am SO GLAD I got sortakinda forced into watching the whole thing. Beautiful movie, ultimately really all about familial love, loyalty, and devotion. Wonderfully bittersweet wind-up, emotionally deep and complex.
But if you never get to that point, you might think it's a stinker. And I'm not sure how much could have been done about that while still telling the same story.

I think the real failure of the movie is the editing. If they had put a few more clues early on that it wasn't just a straight up standard run-of-the-mill horror movie, people might sit through to the second half where it gets really weird and interesting. There's no enough in the first half/quarter to really make you start to wonder, earlier on what's going on.....
Maybe? I feel it needed some change to make it more of a whole rather than two halves, but I'm no screenwriter! And I did like being surprised. It's a tough knot, there.
