So "Wetbacks"... Racist?

Is the use of Wetbacks racist? Is it trying to say that it's NOT racist?

reply

I didn't take it that way. I just thought the writers were trying to be funny, since it was whites trying to get into Mexico instead of the other way around.

reply

Yeah. That whole exchange was a clever highlight of the irony of how different the cultural, and immigration situation was back then, compared to how it is now.

Can we do the n* word next?

reply

The oldest found use of the term is from 1920.

They also used "Bean-eater", which goes back to 1910.

The series is trying to be funny/relevant but just comes across as stupid.

reply

The problem is going to be some people will say that the Mexicans called the whites Wetbacks first.

reply

White "wet backs" if you count wading across the Brazos heading south.
