Well, I tried, but this is terrible

I love just about any "historical" or period piece, but if I'm actually feeling bad for the actors as they say their lines, I think it's official, this is really crappy. bummer.

Agreed

I am on the fence of watching. We have somewhat similar taste, but at times very different one. What did you think of Spartacus? Do you watch GoT?

reply

Is it just me? Or does this mini-series seem a bit Houston-centric? I only ask because some of Bill Paxton's lines seem to imply that Travis and Fannin were egotistical glory-hounds. Standing pat when they'd been ordered to retreat.

reply

This was _not_ a rhetorical question, btw.

reply

Well I liked the boob grab

reply

I thought it was entertaining for the most part, slow during others.

Sigh, maybe you should just watch the action at the end for the battle. People don't want to see anything develop, guess we're too used to two hours of constant action, but that's not real life. This has a story, it's history with real life people, and has a plot.

Sorry, it's bad history. (We study Texas History in school & some of us continue learning--including the stuff that was left out.)

Although I only saw one hour last night, the "cute" young guys seemed really dull. Original characters can add a lot to historical tales, but I was not impressed.

reply

I felt obligated to watch because I'm a naturalized Texan, but I agree, it's not very good. I liked the cute boys, and I was sorry -- well, that would be a spoiler if you haven't seen the second episode.

reply

I give it 1.5 stars...out of 5. Well, maybe 10. I realized it is just another tv mini series that got a good dose of promotion... and seems filled with actors whose careers are on their way to the 'D' list, or have always been there.
Let's hope it does history credit in the coming episodes.

reply

Oh...as long as some guy no one knows calls it "official" it must be true.

reply

Yeah, I'm in about the same place. Gave it a shot (and I love historical shows like Deadwood, Boardwalk Empire, and Vikings), and I'm not going to give it any more of my time.

It felt way too padded, with far too much unnecessary material. It's almost as though the writers wanted to develop the characters, but didn't actually know how, and so the characters were left spending most of their time faffing about instead of actually having stuff to do or react to.

It needed to be leaner, with more character development and more depth. As it is, there was just nothing to get invested in. There were a couple of good moments, but I could count on one hand the number of things that actually happened in the first episode, and that's not a good sign. Cutting the first episode down to half its size would have made it better.

reply

You seem to have contradicted yourself in that last paragraph. Adding character development and depth will not make a story 'leaner', nor will it necessarily increase the number of things that 'actually happened'. The thing is, other than actually documented historical events, anything that occurs in this series is speculation, including things like character development. Which is basically stated outright at the beginning of each episode...

And who the f* are you? Like literally! You didn't vote any movies here so no-one can asses their taste to yours.
