Is it me or does this show not have a plot?

I see no story line anywhere besides uncle john who was murdered but he barely had a part now Richie hasn't been on for awhile. Horrible written show.

Its about Rusty undermining his father in attempt to take control of his father's criminal organization. Rusty is killing people and helped by his uncle.

Check online for the "Westies" This was the Irish gangsters who terrorized "Hell's Kitchen" during this period. Even thought they didn't number over 20 members they probably killed 60 to 100 people. There was almost non stop gang warfare. This was chaos.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else

Actually the Westies were the 70's and 80's with Jimmy Coonan ,Mickey Featherstone etc... in NYC. The irish mob wars were in Boston of which Whitey Bulger and others were involved. There were some shootings and killings in NYC 60's irish mob but not gang warfare.

Totally agree that it's about the rise of the Westies on the gangster side, but it is also about the dirty cops which will eventually get busted. When Ed's dad was a cop in the late 60s and early 70s the dirty cops in the NYPD were busted by an officer who went undercover for the FBI. This was made into Al Pachino's film "Serpico", which Ed also said is an influence on this show too. This is exactly what I think Shea's character really is.

No plot, no drama, no tension. Too bad, the visuals are beautiful, but everything feels hollow.

reply

Your joking right? No tension/drama? : Rusty and Richie trying to kill each other, Rusty killing everyone else etc..

No plot? : Rusty killing one of his father's employees that sets off a war and the corrupt irish cop who is trying to solve his uncle's murder and stop the war while dealing with his family's drama's and his coworker and their drama's especially Bull... his best friend and partner....

I definitely think it's hard to keep the characters straight, or even know who people are half the time, especially since some of them look a lot a like. A little more clarity and better introductions would help, as well as some indication of what's happening. If you have to know a ton of background to have this make sense then it's not going to do well.

reply

No offense but if you can keep the characters simply by just watching then don't know what to tell ya. Myself and everyone else from what i see know whose who and whats what... perhaps you can give me an example.

The show has decent character moments, an interesting time period and premise, but the plot is minimal. I watched the first 5 episodes and I am not sure if I will finish the season.

My issue is that it's difficult for me to keep track of the characters and their names. Especially the women. Had we seen Terry's sister(?) before? I thought she was Sean's sister when they were playing cards but during the dinner scene I figured out she was Terry's sister/Sean's cousin.

When she was on the phone with Rusty, it came off like their storyline had been an on screen storyline in previous episodes. Maybe it has but I don't remember her at all previously.

I still don't know her name.

So is Richie coming back for rusty?

Best scene of the series was when Richie knifed those two guys in the bar.

Kay is Sean's mother and she is Terry's half-aunt. Kay was 16 when she got pregnant with Sean and married O'Bannon. Terry's mother Ina is Kay's older sister and we heard Ina say that Kay was the product of an affair her father had and left Ina's mother for Kay's mother. Ina gave birth to Terry around the same time Kay was born so they grew up together more as siblings, so that's why he is close with Sean as well as he was a teenager too when Sean was born. In last week's episode Terry did mention he has multiple younger sisters, but they haven't been casted yet.

THANK YOU!!! I appreciate you filling me in. Wow, I guess I wasn't paying as close attention as I thought I had been. In last night's episode I remembered seeing her in the first episode(??) at her husband's funeral and Rusty held her hand. How did her husband die? Was it Rusty?

reply

You're welcome. The characters do talk really fast sometimes and Terry's mother went off about it in episode 2. Yes, it was Rusty that killed O'Bannon. Patton and Rusty talked about in it in episode 3 but I think the 2nd episode Rusty admitted it.

There is no such thing as a half aunt lol just an aunt. But you did fill in a question i had: Why Terry and his aunt seem to be about the same age.... ? Now i know...
