When's it getting cancelled

I know Burns has written season two, but given that live ratings have been dropping each week and it is failing in key demographics (I think last week's ratings were .28 for 18-49 year olds and dropped below 1 mil overall), I find it unlikely TNT will continue to pay for it. Besides, there's barely any buzz for it. The labor day binge seems like an attempt to grab ratings that failed.

So let's take bets - how long before TNT axes it?

reply

I still think it has a chance of getting renewed because of how large the binge watching numbers were. Ed posted about it on Twitter that it did work out for Labor Day weekend. Other networks have embraced that too with NBC doing that with "Aquarius" and it get renewed as well. Even if it doesn't I have a feeling Ed will find a way to get season 2 made either by having it get picked up by Netflix or others. With Spielberg's backing he could, or it could still turn into a film series if Ed wants it to. After being a fan of his and as well as being a "Veronica Mars" fan & "The Mindy Project" fan there are lots of options for him it TNT doesn't.

reply

Yeah TNT wont renew on binge alone and Aquarius actually had viewers outside of online stuff. Also the lack of a fanbase is kind of damning - no one is talking about the show. Netflix likes shows with built in fanbases and this doesn't have one.

Mob City had better ratings and a three time Oscar nominee running it and it still got cancelled. I doubt Public Morals will last.

Ed's said that the binge watch numbers and the DVR ones have been good. Plus, he's still already stated about storylines he's written for season 2 and actors he's going to cast. To me it sounds like he's at least verbally been told to go into pre-production. Most network shows won't even start writing the next season till it's been renewed. Plus, check Twitter and Facebook as there is an audience for the show. It reminds me of how Netflix's "Bloodline" started out small but now I know so many that have watched and word of mouth helps spread it. Plus, most of the critics love the show and no matter what I'm positive Ed will find a way to make the 2nd season.

reply

That's not the way TV works though? The numbers are even worse this week - .15 in the 18-49 demo and 0.78 overall. That is remarkably terrible even for TNT and other cable networks. The show is losing audience week after week and no, just because people are binging it doesn't mean anything. They'll probably hold off on a cancellation but unless they turn it around fast they're dead in the water.

And re: Ed's season two plans - they don't mean anything. He started writing it long before the show debuted. But these ratings are crap and anyone who knows anything about TV marketing can see the writing on the wall. If TNT does decide to renew, it'll be a bizarre decision.

And the critics don't all universally love it. NYT and WSJ both panned it, and other critics have been lukewarm towards it at best. So unless they have the same Hail Mary as Mad Men did and start winning some major awards, it's looking more and more likely that it's dead in the water

And *if* a lot of people watched it during Labor Day weekend, then it makes sense that the numbers wouldn't be as great now as they run it week to week - right?

I actually wasn't going to advance-watch during LBW because I am more of a week-to-week watcher when it comes to shows - I like to have a new episode to look through. But, I started watching in the last part of the weekend and got pretty hooked and watched Episodes 3 through 6. (I had already watched the first two)

So if a lot of people watched all 10 episodes during LBW, then it makes sense they wouldn't be watching now, unless they like to watch an episode more than once. (I often do but I don't know if that's the norm.)

reply

That is a part of it. I'm still rewatching it but on my DVR since it sometimes interferes with my work schedule. Plus a lot have seen the first 4 eps but not 5-10 so I have a feeling it should start going up next week since they haven't seen it yet. Plus this doesn't take in any of the DVR numbers which is how my parents and some of my friends watching are watching the show.

Plus, with Ed's tweets and how he's already in pre-production on season 2 I feel like he has to know if it's being renewed. I can't imagine him being almost done writing the 2nd season if it's not going to air. Most writers wouldn't do that if renewal wasn't possibly going to happen.

reply

Yup, I got that feeling too, Buffyfan, from reading his tweets. There seems to be a lot of planning for Season 2 already and I don't think he'd waste time with it if it was just a pipe dream.

Although networks like NBC are quick to cancel shows if the initial numbers aren't good, some of the cable channels have given renewals to shows early on even if they weren't doing super-well in the ratings. I recall that happening with a few of the HBO series in the past.

reply

I mean I haven't seen binge numbers since TNT hasn't publicized them, but Nielson ratings still matter and if you want your show to stick around, you watch it live. So no, the dwindling ratings are still not a good sign.

Friggin' Negative Nelly over heer...what bug crawled up your ass and died...hooo-ah !
This show is super enjoyable,I really hope it gets renewed for a second season.

reply

The rating for the latest episode was only 0.12...it didn't even crack the top 100 of cable shows on Tuesday.

With those numbers, season 2 is definitely not happening.

reply

But the Nielson ratings are so outdated, and Ed and the rest of the cast are already talking about season 2 on Twitter and in pre-production of it. It just goes against what they are all saying. Most are watching online, with mobile, DVR, and it's already debuted in other countries (with more getting it soon) and there are fans there. Ed just even posted yesterday the show is the best reviewed new fall show so far on Rotten Tomatoes. Even if TNT doesn't renew I really think Ed, the cast, and crew will find a way to get season 2 made whether it has to switch to Netflix or if Ed turns it back into films.

reply

Yup. The only real time television I watch is sports. The rest? dvr...always.

reply

I think it is getting good! It is a slow burn series.

reply

soon, total audience is below 650,000 and key demographic barely has a pulse. Burns has delivered another poorly performing TV show (because people are interested in him or what he has to say). The real question is why does he get more than extra work?

reply

Ed's pretty much confirmed it's been renewed. He posted two days ago a picture of a whiteboard from the production meeting of plots coming in season 2 for some of the characters, and today he posted a picture on his FaceBook page of a building they were looking at today while scouting out filming locations for season 2.

reply

given how badly the rating have done (and no public announcement yet from the network) the only reason to continue is the lack of anything in development. If there is no October surprise in the ratings then you could be surprised as well.

Ed has delivered another turkey for the network.

reply

It's officially kaput! Thank goodness what a foolish plot, poor writing, worse acting and frankly no loss!
