Deirdre knew she was pregnant, but shes STILL smoking?

WTF was up with THAT? Is this just me, or does that seem out of character for her?

Obviously I dont mean the simple fact that she was smoking, but the fact that she was smoking while shes pregnant...

She just strikes me as being more responsible than that.

Everyone smoked in the 60s.

That's how it was in the 60s. The FDA didn't really come out with all the warnings or findings till the 70s. Mad Men even did a storyline about this as in the late 60s they started to find all the side effects smoking caused. At this point in this show no one would know that.

hmmmm. .. I guess I didnt kno... it was nearly 20 years before i was birn

Yes “they” did know. There were studies linking smoking to lung cancer
as early as 1943. The first study I found about smoking and pregnancy
dates from . . . 1935 !! Shame on doctors and the judiciary system
that caved in to the tobacco industry for so long.

Did you also notice she had a large bottle of bourbon/scotch/whisky sitting on the table? Back in the '60's it was okay for pregnant women to smoke and drink.

How did we survive?

As Gomez Addams said. "I've smoked since I was five, Mother insisted!"

reply

hahaha I vaguely remember...

...but did Gomez say that in the TV show? or one of the movies?

reply

Cigarettes were actually advertised as a weight control aid for women back in those days! The health risks weren't known yet, especially its effect on fetuses.

reply

Also advertising use to run ads stating Doctors choose Such and Such Cigarettes because they find them more healthier

reply

On Mad Men, which tries to be authentic as possible, They had pregnant women smoking and drinking. Don's wife would even have a cigarette in her mouth while spoon feeding the youngest baby.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else

reply

They weren't really aware of the effects of smoking on pregnancy until the 70's. Ever watch Mad Men? Betty also smoked and drank like a sailor on shore leave while she was pregnant.

reply

Deidre is so beautiful too...

But yeah, smoking while pregnant is no good at all

reply

Seems to me that some study in the '80s showed that babies born to smokers were heavier (healthier?) than average.

reply

Is that actually true? lol

reply

Of course it's not--duh!
