Police Squad / Sledge Hammer! & The Big Bus / Airplane / Top Secret etc.

I'm old enough to remember when Police Squad was still being shown on TV, to have seen Naked Gun in the cinema and when Sledge Hammer! was on late night TV here in the UK (although very obscure on Channel 4 I think - when we still only had four channels...). One viewing of an ad for this show was enough for me to see exactly where it's coming from.

If you are young and dig this show, and like to know about the history of where things originated then check them out - along with The Big Bus (1976), Airplane (1980), Top Secret! (1984). As you can see, the fad of this kinda surreal/spoof humour was at it's peak from the late seventies to the late eighties and although it's almost completely dead now (as far as I am aware), it did peter out with the likes of Hot Shots (1991) and Loaded Weapon (1993).

I don't think Angie Tribica has aired in the UK yet but I'll be interested to see if it's any good, and if there's still an audience for this kinda thing. I hope it has some originality to it and isn't just a complete rip-off. It would have been nice if they had set it in a seemingly more original setting than a police / crime scenario though, as that has been done by the aforementioned Police Squad / Sledge Hammer! already. I think if i'd been writing it, I would have kept the humour style but taken up the challenge of a new scenario.

I would guess that I'm about the same age as you and also from the UK. I remember all those programmes you mentioned and yes, Police Squad is definitely the illegitimate parent of Angie Tribeca. The Pilot episode was hilarious and I'm recommending it to everyone.

This show desperately wants to be Police Squad/Sledge Hammer, but not one single person involved in it has the comic skill or timing of the people that made those shows. It's . . . not good.

WORDS MEAN THINGS! Also, before you come to bitch about a plot hole, rewatch the show/movie.

The dog has great comic timing.

This is much worse than any one of those.

I love David Rasche and Sledge Hammer! It must be available somewhere (for one, the DVDs are available at Amazon), and I'd recommend to everyone that they watch it.

Also, MeTV is now running it in a late night/early morning time slot, Sunday 2:30am, EST.
