It just seems like the steel from those containers could be recycled easily enough where you could build homes from them, with proper insulation and ventilation, etc.
When building a house, they have to put up a frame and then cover it with something (wood, brick, etc). The shipping containers are already a sturdy "structure" with four walls, a floor and roof. The hard work is done, they just need to be modified to have the usual amenities of a home. Also, I've heard that old shipping containers aren't all that expensive, maybe a few thousand each, so it's more economical to buy 2-3 of them, bolt them together and then modify them to be livable than to start from scratch.
People live in mobile homes/trailers which aren't even as big. Bolt 2-4 containers together and you can have a surprisingly roomy house.
It wasn't like he was just going to plop them down in a field somewhere, hand them a flashlight and say "Welcome to your new home!"
